Karla Fortez, a visionary dance artist featured in “Somos Cumbia, Somos Familia,” shared powerful insight into why events like the Dance on Camera Festival matter so deeply.
"Dance is as important to humanity as life itself. Some of the films were talking about the importance of how we are all connected through movement. The movements, the sounds, the emotions, instead of words. There are many things to stop many things that are going around the world just by dancing. So dancing is part of that connection that we need."
Colombian dancer and educator Karla Florez preserves her Colombian roots and culture through movement, storytelling and family. This documentary follows Karla as she passes down the rhythms of Cumbia to her daughters, students and community, keeping the heartbeat of Colombia alive far from home.

DuEls was a smash hit this year at the Dance on Camera Festival. Hear what co-Artistic Director of @nagellhusschiaproductions , Vebjørn Sundby, had to say about sharing the film with an international audience. Featuring choreography by @damienjalet and directed by @jonasakerlund .
DuEls is a dance film by the renowned Swedish director Jonas Åkerlund. It is based on Nagelhus Schia Productions’ successful dance performance choreographed by Damien Jalet and Erna Omarsdottir first presented at the Vigeland museum in Oslo in 2020. Through a series of short and visceral pieces performed in the form of a tour performance through the museum, the dance contributes to release the concentrated energy in Vigeland's iconic sculptures.

Fangirl alert.
David Henry Hwang has created the most meaningful theater around Asian American themes.
M. Butterfly—saw it on Broadway with B.D. Wong and John Lithgow in 1988.
Yellow Face—went with Cory last year to see Broadway production with the amazing Daniel Dae Kim
Flower Drum Song—watched remake with new book by DHH and can’t wait to see revival by East West Players in LA this April.
So it was surreal to have DHH moderating our Q&A about race and representation in ballet after Sunday’s screening of my new doc About Face at Dance Films Association festival.
Pinch me!

Tonight in New York
DuEls screened at Symphony Space as part of the prestigious Dance on Camera Festival.
Produced and performed by Nagelhus Schia Productions, with the participation of Iceland Dance Company, the work was created by Damien Jalet and Erna Ómarsdóttir, and directed for film by Jonas Åkerlund.
We had the pleasure of introducing the film to the New York audience.
Grateful for the attentive audience, the generous words, and the space for dialogue.❤️
