It would be an understatement to say this has been the most meaningful work of dance theater I’ve had the privilege of working on. Chinese immigrants detained at Angel Island between 1910 - 1940 carved poetry on the walls of their cells, which @huang.ruo immortalized into this stunning oratorio, was brought to life in dance by 7 Asian choreographers alongside the genius of @delsolquartet and @voltisf . What a thrill to bring it to @thesfwarmemorial in year 5 of @oaklandballetcompany annual Dancing Moons Festival, the first dedicated to AAPI choreography. The company is looking so strong right now too, it has been a joy and privilege to work with such articulate and sensitive artists. Thank you to Graham and Bat and the Board for believing in this work — can’t wait to take it on the road soon 🥹 📸 @vin.vuthikorn

A dream come true: premiering “Double Happiness” with @oaklandballetcompany at @greatstartheater — the oldest Chinese theater in North America for the fifth annual Dancing Moons Festival, the first festival dedicated to Asian American choreography by a ballet company. A special thank you to @ballethispanico for having me to workshop this Chino Latino ballet last year, and to @khi430 for her playful costumes and @vin.vuthikorn for these wonderful photos. Of course, my favorite part of any Oakland Ballet performance is the chance to see my dad…
May is the Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. To celebrate and remember, the @oaklandballetcompany is unveiling ANGEL ISLAND, a dance-theatre by 7 AAPI choreographers with music from my Angel Island Oratorio, teaming up with @delsolquartet and @voltisf . Please come join us for our two performances on May 8 and 9, and panel talk on May 5, Herbst Theatre, SF.
