First glimpse of SUPPLIANTS OF SYRIA opening tonight at Hoxton Hall!
Striking masks. Fierce physicality. Flashes of humour that cut through the tension. And no simple answers.
An ancient Greek story, reimagined for now. Live performance collides with filmed testimony to explore the politics, and humanity, of refuge.
Who belongs?
Who gets to decide?
SUPPLIANTS OF SYRIA runs 3–8 March at Hoxton Hall.
After every performance, live music from Syrian musicians and local London choirs.
Alongside the show, a free daytime exhibition ARRIVING BECOMING BELONGING features work by artists from refugee backgrounds, open to the public throughout the run.

“I’d love for audiences to see a different side to the argument.”
SUPPLIANTS OF SYRIA starts from a simple question: who gets to shape the story of migration?
In this Q&A, Albie Marber, Tobi King Bakare and Vlad Gurdis talk about creating devised theatre alongside filmed testimony, navigating the space between personal experience and performance, and what happens when audiences become part of the conversation.
Created in collaboration with Syrian refugee women in Turkey, SUPPLIANTS OF SYRIA brings filmed testimonies into live dialogue with physical theatre, poetry and at times humour in a contemporary reimagining of Aeschylus’ Suppliants, the first drama to confront the politics of asylum.
Each night ends with a public debate, inviting audiences to explore the play’s unresolved questions.

Physical, playful and constantly evolving, the work brings live performance into dialogue with filmed testimony. Movement, poetry, humour and debate sit side by side in a contemporary reimagining of Aeschylus’ Suppliants, the first drama to stage the politics of asylum.
