@greenscaleusa ’s 21,000 sq. ft. aquaponics facility in Boise, Idaho, utilizes the latest advancements in agriculture and technology — with interconnected systems between plants, fish, and microbes — to produce nutrient-dense food. In partnership with @andersen.construction and @mcmillenofficial , Cushing Terrell supported the code plan and permitting for this innovative agricultural facility. The Boise location is a greenhouse and fish farm that provides space for plants to grow in ponds fortified with fish biproduct. Leafy greens grow in the ponds in three bays of the building with lighting and ventilation to help reduce time to maturity for the plants. The enclosed space also allows Greenscale to avoid the need for pesticides. An on-site tilapia fish house provides nutrients for the plants, while the bottom bay of the building has plant processing space where they’re harvested and packaged for local markets. Then, new seeds are loaded into trays to restart the cycle. Whole fish will also be raised and distributed to local markets. The systems utilized at Greenscale are better for the environment, utilizing innovations in water management and circulation systems, as well as creating an optimized ecosystem in their one-of-a-kind greenhouses — without generating industrial waste. It's super cool to see this facility operating in Boise! #greenscale #aquaponics #aquaculture #hydroponics #agriculturalinnovations #aquaponicsfacilitydesign

For a critical access hospital in Haines, Alaska, the design of two entry sequences and a long-term care courtyard will create defining features for the facility that will enhance the overall patient experience with a variety of spaces where people can connect with nature while on their healing journey. “Located in the northern part of Alaska’s Inside Passage, Haines is known for its fjords, glaciers, and lush temperate rainforest,” said Christopher Muir with Cushing Terrell’s landscape architecture team. “The beauty of nature here is abundant, and people hold a great affinity for the outdoors. Thus, our landscape architecture concepts for the project take inspiration from this surrounding environment with an eye to best utilizing what’s already in place.” Each space will transition people into and around the building with clear wayfinding and a reassuring presence that reinforces a sense of shelter and care. These spaces will meld with the surrounding natural environment and complement the aesthetic of the building while offering spaces to enjoy movement, fresh air, sunlight, and repose. #WLAM #WLAM2026 #LandscapeArchitecture #HealthcareDesign #PatientExperience #WorldLandscapeArchitectureMonth #CriticalAccessHospital @nationalasla

In honor of Earth Day, we’re celebrating how community and collaboration support the development of holistic, sustainable design solutions. "Ultimately, the power of sustainability lies in people and the power of our collective actions," said Ashleigh Powell, director of sustainability at Cushing Terrell. "By investing in knowledge and cultivating a strong sense of community, we turn intent into impact — creating resilient, healthy, and sustainable environments that serve people today and strengthen communities for the future." On our blog, Ashleigh speaks to some of our recent projects that exemplify this collaboration and demonstrate how we're "plugged in," working to harness our energy and expertise, along with the dedication of our clients, to realize a better built environment. Click the blog link in our bio to learn  more about the projects behind our Earth Day series, including the CapEd Downtown Boise YMCA, Hill Elementary School in Austin, and the comprehensive planning effort for the Town of Fraser, Colorado. #EarthDay #EarthDay2026 #OurPowerOurPlanet #SustainableDesign #SustainableDesignSolutions

As part of Boise Housing Week (April 13-17), the City of Boise and ULI Idaho convened a Design Lab for Neighborhood Housing in which community members teamed up to ideate and showcase what housing could become. Teams were tasked with reimagining housing in different neighborhoods and contexts throughout Boise, focusing on triplexes, fourplexes, cottage villages, and/or small apartments. Cushing Terrell team member Colton Diehl joined Brian Wenzel (Cole Architects), Jamie Somma (Glocal Community Partners), and Reggie Mace (Stack Rock Group) in the Design Lab competition, with one of the visuals from their concept shown here. "I'm thankful to the City of Boise and ULI for giving local designers, builders, students, and creatives the opportunity to influence the code by doing what we do best — dreaming and visualizing! The requirement for neighborhood input to heavily influence the design is an element that really benefitted our work," Colton said. Want to see all the concepts? The Design Lab exhibition is on display at Boise State University’s Center for the Visual Arts (on the second floor) and is open 7 a.m.–10 p.m. You can even vote for your favorite design submission! @uli_idaho @city_of_boise @diehlak @colearchitects @glocalcommunitypartners @stackrockgroup @boisestateuniversity @boisestateadvs #BoiseHousingWeek #UrbanHousingSolutions #AffordableHousing #NeighborhoodHousing #UrbanInfill #DesignLab

It's World Landscape Architecture Month, and we're celebrating the profession and the beneficial impacts landscape architects have on people's health, climate resilience, and daily life. One of the projects our team is currently engaged in is JR’s Park on Simplot Hill in Boise, Idaho. The four-phase project will transform the storied Simplot Hill property into a multi-faceted, 120-acre community park with hiking trails, a tractor museum, outdoor amphitheater, hilltop pavilion, play areas, and art installations. The park is imagined as a canvas — one that reveals the natural landscape while giving visitors opportunities for whimsy, wonder, and discovery throughout the site. Highlights of the project include: areas throughout that invite visitors to explore and reflect, native plant design, intentional shading and areas of respite, water conservation tactics, a hiking trail experience with picturesque stops and wildlife information, and integral accessibility modifications so all may enjoy the outdoor spaces. #ASLA @nationalasla #WLAM2026 #LandscapeArchitecture #LandscapeArchitectureCareers #SimplotHill #JRsPark #BoiseID

In downtown Seattle, @pccmarkets saw an opportunity to re-evaluate the size, layout, and purpose of their leased space inside Rainier Tower and to reimagine it as both an efficient, urban-focused market and a PCC office space for their downtown team. To meet this unique combination of needs, PCC brought on Cushing Terrell to provide tenant improvements to optimize the space for their customer base, create a separate workplace for their employees, and incorporate PCC’s values of quality standards, integrity, and stewardship. “This project was about more than just reconfiguring a space — it was about honoring PCC’s deep roots in the community while creating a welcoming, efficient environment for everyone who walks through the door,” said architectural design lead Kara Eberle-Lott. “By preserving key elements of the original store and thoughtfully integrating new features, we were able to support PCC’s mission and foster a sense of connection that truly puts community at the core.” At about a third of the space originally occupied by PCC’s original downtown store, the PCC Corner Market supports quick, convenient shopping trips and brings their team closer to the patrons of this small-format grocery store. New in our portfolio: @collegeofwesternidaho 's Agricultural Sciences Complex is a 40-acre site dedicated to education and training in horticulture, landscape design, floral science, and animal science. Located on CWI’s Nampa Campus, the site comprises an animal science barn, a horticulture greenhouse, a shop, a student-designed arboretum, and the Simplot Agriculture Building, which houses classrooms, labs, and student/staff areas. The design-build team of @esi.construction and Cushing Terrell partnered with @the_landgroup (civil engineering and landscape architecture), and @axiom_engineering (structural engineering) to develop the site for all indoor and outdoor needs of the agriculture and horticulture programs. Buildings were designed to accommodate versatility. The team incorporated features that connect indoor and outdoor areas, such as glass overhead doors that open to transform the utility of the classrooms while moveable partition walls between classrooms make it so rooms can be adjusted depending on event and capacity needs. The team also considered ease-of-use for students and staff transitioning from outside to inside with shower rooms and lockers for work boots and tools. The Simplot Agriculture Building and its outdoor spaces are dually proposed to meet the needs of students and staff and to welcome the public with the flexibility to hold events, seminars, and markets. New in our portfolio: The Health & Science Building on @collegeofwesternidaho 's Nampa Campus is the first newly completed building of several that will form a campus quad and create a unified, higher-education experience for students. Designed to foster experiential learning, the 60,000-square-foot building consolidates many of CWI’s fast-growing health and science programs under one roof. It encompasses state-of-the-art simulation suites, flexible laboratory spaces, multiple classroom types, conference rooms, offices, lockers, a kitchen, and study and breakout areas. Randi Thomas, interior designer for the project, said: “The design team drew parallels between the major systems of the human body and the major building systems. For example, we imagined the building’s structure as the skeletal system, the mechanical and electrical components as the circulatory system, and HVAC as the respiratory system.” A big thank you to CWI, we love supporting your projects, and a big shoutout to our partners @esi.construction , @axiom_engineering , @the_landgroup , and @freeformspaces for their work on this beautiful, functional, user-focused project that will support higher education needs and a skilled workforce across the Treasure Valley. New in our portfolio: A shift in shopper sentiment prioritizing meal planning, convenience, and fresh, seasonal offerings has prompted grocers to respond with unique features that give customers another reason to make the trip. @tandcmarkets in Poulsbo, Washington, exemplifies this change. The renovated location is more than a market: It’s a collection of experiences. This approach is a natural progression for the regional grocer, which has always positioned itself as a community hub and a source for inspiration. Design updates touched every department: some were enhanced, others were entirely revamped. To broaden the store’s appeal, the design called for new elements, such as a classroom, reimagined meal inspiration center, a test kitchen, and an outdoor patio. Additionally, the store’s beauty and houseware sections were elevated with new fixtures and lighting, creating a more inviting and modern retail environment; the deli and cheese areas were updated; and the produce and floral departments received new signage, valances, and casing. The project’s banner component is Field House restaurant, embedded inside — yet distinct from — the market. While Cushing Terrell has supported many projects for Town & Country Markets over the years, this was their first restaurant collaboration. The process was successfully realized in a partnership with @esrfamily whose team guided the restaurant flow, equipment selection, and back-of-house operations. A big thank you to our project partners @malletdesignbuild and Woodman Construction, Inc. Photography: @k7scott #foodandbeveragedesign #retaildesign #restaurantdesign #grocerydesign

On the boards: The City of Boise has partnered with Cushing Terrell on the design of Whitney Pool, previously named South Pool, which closed in 2020. This neighborhood staple meant a lot to the community, so our team is excited to work on a solution the neighborhood can be proud of — one that will blend with the eclectic, mid-century styles of nearby homes and will offer space for a food truck, a 200-person capacity, ample covered seating, a large pool deck, an area for swimming lessons, and even a slide. Thank you to our design partners, The Land Group and Aquatic Design Group, who assisted in creating a site layout that incorporates public access and drop-off spaces, and a micro-mobility area for scooters, bikes, and other micro-mobility vehicles.   #pooldesign #communitypooldesign #boise #midcentury #civicdesign
