📣 📣 New Architextures Story 📣
When Built Works Director Harry Kay showed me around recently opened chocolate shop Barnaby in London’s Covent Garden, the excited crowds of eager chocolate lovers made it tricky to see the practice's wonderful re-imagining of the space 🍫
Built Works are gaining a reputation for using sustainable materials to create beautifully designed spaces. Barnaby is testament to the practice’s skill in placing considered detail and craft central to the project. Built Works co-Director Harry Kay worked closely with Tom Morris of Morrisstudio to come up with an architectural recipe as equally enticing as the handcrafted chocolate made and sold on site. The result is ravishing 💛

Built.Works collaborated with Tom Morris of Morrisstudio to create a handcrafted space where the materials look as mouthwateringly good as the chocolate 🍫

A big reference point for our design of @barnabychocolatebars was Bournville, the Edwardian model town built near Birmingham by the Cadbury family for its workers.
Designed by Arts & Crafts architect William Alexander Harvey, it’s filled with characterful timber beam houses, brick chimneys, pretty gardens and a copper verdigris clock tower. It was how we came to the tobacco-coloured wood panelling in Barnaby (landing just shy of the ceiling to feel like an old library or village hall, although the reference was actually a Japanese minka home), the bespoke verdigris lantern above the counter and the ancient tusk and tenon joints on the facade beautifully and intricately designed by @built.works .
More symbolically, we wanted to use ceramic as a key material from the get-go as its firing process (kinda) mirrors the enrobing process that the bars go through.
We designed the oblong geometric pattern to mimic the motif of chocolate bars all lined up. The glazes – caramel yellow, chocolate brown, hedge green and sky blue – are pulled from Art Deco posters advertising Bournville as a place to live in the 1930s. They were made with great expertise and patience by @commonobjects.studio

We’re making it a thing because there’s no better way to start the week than gathering together, learning new skills and making something both beautiful and practical.
Active meditation really works and left us all feeling calmly focussed & soulfully uplifted.
So much so Michelle and I managed to make some exciting plans for more workshops heading your way.
