Set quietly within the woodland, this feels less like a building and more like a ritual. Designer of this beautiful Japanise inspired sauna shed @built.works #saunadesign #woodarchitecture #architecture #japaniseinspired #wellness

Delighted to have secured planning permission for a full retrofit and extension of a Victorian home in Tufnell Park. The project will target EnerPHit standards, dramatically improving energy performance through a fabric-first approach. All upgrades will use natural, fully sustainable materials — creating a healthy, breathable home that supports the long-term wellbeing of both the young family living there and the building itself. A new brick and timber rear addition and top-floor terrace complete the transformation — blending performance, heritage, and craft. We have been working with a fabulous client and a super progressive team with @webbyates @hatton_planning Greengauge @diggandco Future Ready Homes #EnerPHit #NaturalMaterials #DeepRetrofit #LowCarbonArchitecture #SustainableHomes TufnellPark HealthyBuildings BuiltWorks RetrofitDesign

Our proposals for sustainable holiday accomodation in an East Sussux AONB and ancient woodland are nearly there! Bather's Cabin has been clad in its oversized, flared larch shingles, and Yogi's Douglas Fir cladding is going on. Head to @architects.holiday to see more and book to stay in this amazing place. Much of our work sits within historic buildings and sensitive settings, where care, judgement and technical rigour matter most. We’re drawn to residential projects that require a deep understanding of existing fabric — evolving houses through careful retrofit, reconfiguration, renovation and extension. From early concept and planning through to detailed design, sustainable material choices and delivery on site, our work is defined by precision, material intelligence and respect for what is already there. If you’re considering a residential project of this nature, particularly within a historic or sensitive context, please get in touch to discuss your ambitions and how we can help take them from first ideas through to construction.

In flight: We have had a lot of work make the transition from drawing board to reality this year. A number of projects progressing on site. These are all recent snapshots of work we cannot wait to complete! From a full retrofit and extension in Wandsworth, to infill work within a historic courtyard in Windermere; a cathedral-like extension in west London, a clay-tiled roof addition in Streatham, a marble-lined extension in Tufnell Park, and a substantial basement beneath a double-fronted villa in Hackney. Carefully detailed, materially led, and looking forward to seeing them complete early in the new year.

It’s never the reason we do the work, but it has been genuinely encouraging to see it recognised this year, alongside so much thoughtful and carefully made architecture. Our projects have been featured in the @architectsjournal Small Projects Awards, shortlisted for the @riba Awards, shown as part of the @royalacademyarts Summer Exhibition, included in the @architecturefoundation New Architects 5 directory, and featured widely across architectural and national press. We’re deeply grateful to our collaborators and consultant teams — and most of all to our clients — for their trust, determination and belief in the work, particularly through what has been a tough couple of years for the practice for personal reasons. Looking ahead with optimism to what next year brings!

Episode 4 of our long overdue cabin diary is now live in the journal section of our website. See link in bio. Also, we have an exciting new cabin to share with you, (well sort of), as ‘Architect’s Cabin’ is becoming ‘Bather’s Cabin’. This renaming better reflects the celebration of bathing rituals that has been designed into the cabin, which was originally inspired by Peter Zumthor’s Therme Vals. At the heart of the cabin is a hand-crafted spa occupying most of the cabin’s floor space. It will have an intimate soaking tub overlooking the forest, plus a secluded rooftop deck with a sauna, hot tub and ice bath offering complete privacy amongst the trees for a true forest bathing experience. Wee wah woo wah. Fear not though architecture lovers, as Architect’s Cabin will be reincarnated at some point soon. Anyway, back to the film… In this episode, we’re building and raising the timber frame of Bather’s cabin, beneath the towering oaks in our ancient woodland at Great Park Farm. Throwing ourselves all the way back to February 2025 where the story continues, (sorry we are a little behind on the editing), we show you what we were up to back in Spring with a first peek at the spaces we are creating. (It’s around 10 minutes, the perfect length for pre-bed viewing, so you can dream about cabins all night). Let us know what you think ☺️

Some mega progress on site this week with Architect’s Cabin 🙌🏼. It looks like I’m taking all the credit here, but my good friend Alex and his team did all the hard work getting the shingles on and Danny and Gabe did most of the painting in the freezing cold 😜. Thanks guys! For the curious, we are using a natural black pine tar treatment which is traditionally used in Scandinavia. We should be finished externally by Christmas, and hold your breath… finished internally by Spring. There will be a full update to come soon… and of course multiple cabin diary episodes to be released, which I am very behind with 🤦🏻‍♂️ Cabins designed and delivered by @built.works Locally sourced larch shingles supplied by @copfordsawmill

Waterfoot Square 🌿 We’ve been working with Rossendale Borough Council, @other_peoples_dreams , @unilancashire , and @_baxendale to create a new temporary public square and events space at the heart of Waterfoot — part of a wider consultation towards a new masterplan and permanent town square for the town. Built from locally sourced materials and reused ash timber from trees sadly lost to dieback, the project transforms a car park into a welcoming place for markets, theatre, music and everyday gathering, celebrating Waterfoot’s strong community spirit and creative culture. Fabrication is underway with phase 1 being installed on site soon. The pavilion as phase 2 will follow in the new year. #Waterfoot #Rossendale #Lancashire #PublicRealm #CommunityDesign #UrbanRegeneration #Placemaking #TimberArchitecture #SustainableDesign #BuiltWorks #OtherPeoplesDreams #UCLan #Baxendale #ArtsAndCulture #CommunityLedDesign #CircularDesign #TownSquare

The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition is an event we go to every year to see new works from around the world that inspire us. We are extremely proud to have had a model of our Drying Shed Sauna featured in the 2025 exhibition. From dropping the model off at the RA, the church service on Varnishing Day, to seeing the model in the gallery space amongst so many incredible works - it felt like we were a small part of something historic. @royalacademyarts @architects.holiday #summerexhibition #royalacademy #architecture #architecturalmodel #modelmaking
