Charcoal Stories. A @chrysalisprojects Project in collaboration with Vernon Ah Kee, @waanjiman Avid Reader and Tim Bennetton Architects See their name. Say their name. Vernon Ah Kee’s homage to local writers, writ large at Avid Reader. It takes a Village to make a landmark mural. Charcoal Stories was seeded in late 2020 by @becmacstudio and @mscarmelh during the COVID crisis to employ artists, revitalise the struggling Boundary Street shops, and bring the West End community together. The flagship creation of Chrysalis Projects 4101 has transformed the literary hub of Brisbane’s iconic West End – Avid Reader – into a major landmark public artwork by globally recognised, Brisbane based, contemporary artist Vernon Ah Kee. The mural wraps around the bookstore and celebrates a curated list of Brisbane authors, whose names fill square tiles in Ah Kee’s signature bold black and white text. This mosaic of word play is overlaid by dark surfboard shields, which feature the names of Brisbane’s Aboriginal authors in Ah Kee’s own handwriting. The work is a testament to the power of art in place. It takes a Village to create a landmark mural. The project Charcoal Stories is a demonstration of the power of collaboration with the enduring support of artist Vernon Ah Kee (who never lost faith), @avidreader @fionastager & Kevin Guy and the West End community. The pro bono assistance in legalities by Drakos and Co. Solicitors, Gadens, architecture expertise by @timbennetton_architects , @uapcompany , the late @eatoncameron assisted us with engineering design and Daron Hodder manufactured the panels. The moral support by our friend and donor, Anne Fardoulys, (our local dentist) and @lindyjohnsoncreative can never be underestimated. The team at @milanigallery were always available for advice and support. The installation is over 100sqm across 52 artwork panels hand painted meticulously by the team from @allcitywalls artists @yannickblattner and @benjaminwerner_ Werner, both artists in their own right. This was a monumental feat, under the artistic direction of Vernon Ah Kee All paint products were proudly sponsored by @resenecolour Photos @jonothan_oldham @mscarmelh @waanjiman @avidreader @timbennetton_architects @resenecolour @leesawatego @milanigallery @allcitywalls @yannickblattner @benjaminwerner_ @eatoncameron @uapcompany @daronhodder @lindyjohnsoncreative

In 2032 The Olympics Paralympics are coming to Brisbane, the Olympics legacy is on the table! We have the opportunity to make Brisbane one of the safest cities for women and marginalised communities in the world while supercharging our creative sector & making it a better place for everybody. Let’s be ambitious! I am very passionate about the intersection between arts & culture & a vibrant night time economy to make a safer city for women. My @Winston @churchill_trust @churchillfellowship builds on my years of research in understanding how a thriving arts scene is part of making a city a safer city. By activating public spaces with cultural events & artistic interventions, we foster a sense of community and inclusivity, making these spaces more welcoming & secure, especially for women and marginalised groups. With my Fellowship I will be researching global governance models of the night time economy by meeting with Mayoral offices & night-time economy experts such as “Night Mayors” I’ll also meet with Urban planners & Place Makers and artists and curators working in this space to learn best practise so that I can then influence how we shape our city into the future. I will be travelling to LA, New York, London, Paris and Amsterdam and Berlin as each city has a different focus in their governance model e.g. NYC has a focus on its hospitably industries where the Night Czar of London is on women safety. I will also want to meet with the director of the Cultural Olympiad in LA & Paris to understand lessons learnt around legacy outcomes. The research would help establish the groundwork for implementing the “Mayoress of the Night” concept - a revolutionary approach to night-time governance that centres women’s experiences and safety. It may feed into a digital platform to share research findings and recommendations with key stakeholders including urban planners, arts organisations, and policy makers. I will also develop a pilot program to test innovative approaches to women-led cultural activation in night-time spaces which could include an exhibition and community workshops. This model and toolbox could be scaled and used in other cities and communities.

@wowaustralia_ 16 Days of Activism Against Gendered Violence. Present Formidable Females a project @wowglobal partnered with @chrysalisprojects for their Arts Against Gendered Violence project in 2022. Artist @jacquistockdale Stockdale created a series of live portraits, capturing the faces of some of the most formidable females from the city of Brisbane. The @chrysalisprojects office window was the ideal site for a public studio performance facing out of the @judithwrightcentre onto the bustle of Brunswick St and the idea of 10 portraits culminating in an exhibition was aptly named Formidable Females. In the end it was eleven! Over four days in two hour sittings Jacqui stared into the eyes of the formidable and created this stunning, powerful series. This was followed by an opening in the Judith Wright Gallery. Kathryn Lyons has overcome major barriers through her complex disability, a progressive degenerative unidentifiable connective tissue disorder, global in nature, which left her bed bound for nearly six years, as doctors had told her she was dying and to go home and take it ‘easy’. She is a passionate leader, innovator, mentor, advocate, change agent and ambassador focusing on universal inclusion for all. Her vision is to empower and enable people globally, beginning with better access for disabled patrons. The group are united in a mission to raise awareness and much-needed funding for organisations dedicated to supporting victims of violence or abuse. Dangerous Females aim to reclaim the word danger - a term that is often used to restrict and silence women, always being told it’s too dangerous to be out alone at night, to be on our own, to wear a specific type of attire.
