We all know that men are more than the narrow expectations of what a man is supposed to be. Melissa Wong Oviedo from @equimundo_org talks about the importance of recognising men – Black men, Indigenous men, working-class men, rural men – in their full humanity. As fathers, mentors, coaches, carers and community leaders. Because when we uplift more caring, connected models of masculinity, we create space for the next generation of boys to imagine something different for themselves too 🌍✨

“None of us can solve these issues on our own.” That’s the spirit behind the MenCare Changemaker Journey 🌍 Bringing together artists, educators, policymakers, researchers and activists from across the world to tackle some of the biggest challenges around masculinity, care and gender equality – collectively. Hope feels a lot more possible when it’s shared ✨

Meet the Changemakers! The Changemakers collaborate across eight action tracks, each focused on a critical area for change. This is the Boys & Education track. Educational environments play a critical role in shaping how boys understand themselves, their relationships, and their place in the world. Yet many education systems continue to struggle with how to respond to boys’ gendered experiences, patterns of underachievement, and changing social realities. This track brings together educators, researchers, policymakers, advocates, and cultural leaders working to create learning environments where boys are supported to reach their full potential academically, emotionally, and socially. The group is focused on developing strategies that encourage empathy, emotional literacy, healthy relationships, and broader opportunities for boys across all areas of life. Changemakers in this track are working to engage the institutions and stakeholders that shape education and training systems, from schools and universities to governments and media. Together, they are exploring how boys are taught, the expectations placed on them, the career pathways presented to them, and the messages they receive throughout their education. What changes do you think education systems need to better support boys, while also advancing empathy, equality, and wellbeing? #MenCare #MenCareChangemakers #BoysAndEducation #GenderEquality #Education

What if online communities could make people feel safer, more connected and less vulnerable to harm? As we get ready for the MenCare Changemaker Summit, Galen Lamphere-Englund from The Christchurch Call reflects on the power of gaming communities to build genuine social bonds through shared experience. Because if we can understand what helps people feel belonging, purpose and community online, we can also better protect against isolation, extremism and other forms of online harm.

Trad Wife or Girl Boss… same problem? From the polished domesticity of “tradwife” culture to the endless hustle of the “girlboss” era, women are constantly being sold competing visions of empowerment. But are these trends really as different as they seem – or are they rooted in the same patriarchal and racist ideals? Join Tamu Thomas, Lois Shearing and Zara Hanawalt tomorrow for a live conversation exploring ambition, unpaid labour, burnout, race and who actually benefits from these narratives. 📅 14 May, 4pm BST ✨ Part of WOW 365 Membership Join WOW 365 for access to this and dozens more live and recorded events. Meet the Changemakers! The Changemakers collaborate across eight action tracks, each focused on a critical area for change. This is the Caring Manhood in Cities & Regions track. Cities and regions play a major role in shaping daily life, access to care, safety, and community wellbeing. Because local governments are often responsible for delivering public services to individuals and families, they have significant influence over how caregiving is supported and how inclusive communities are built. This track brings together city leaders, policymakers, researchers, and advocates working on solutions that support caregiving, engage men as caregivers, prevent violence, and strengthen community connection. The group is exploring how public spaces, transport systems, housing, urban planning, and local services can be designed to better support care and create safer, more equitable environments for everyone. What would make your city or community more supportive of caregiving, safety, and connection? #MenCare #MenCareChangemakers #CaringManhood #GenderEquality #Urban

The MenCare Global Summit isn’t our first time in Brazil 🇧🇷 We’ve been working with the brilliant @redesdamare since 2018 and what a journey it’s been… 💥 In 2018, WOW Rio burst onto the scene with the biggest WOW Festival ever, welcoming 193,000 people 💥 In 2020, the Festival moved online 💥 In 2022, WOW Rio hosted Ecoar! - the Brazilian edition of Shameless! 💥 In 2023, WOW Rio returned to Praça Mauá 💥 And last year, WOW Rio took place in Maré for the very first time, bringing the Festival into the favela We’re so excited to be back in Rio this month for the MenCare Global Summit. As part of the Summit, participants will take part in small-group visits across the city - meeting artists, institutions, policymakers and community leaders working on masculinity, care and equality in practice. That includes visits to Maré to learn from the community-led work of Redes da Maré and Fight for Peace, as well as sessions exploring public policy, justice, fatherhood, prevention and care systems across Rio.
