COUNTDOWN TO PHOTO LONDON: CHARLES JOHNSTONE We are excited to participate in @photolondonfair next week, and proud to be showing a selection of work by @charlesjohnstone made on expired Polaroid film and being exhibited for the first time. In his own words, “I have created over 20 artist photobooks. Several of my books utilize expired Polaroid film, with which I have made screenshots of iconic actresses such as Monica Vitti, Anna Karina, Setsuko Hara and Marianne Faithfull to name a few. Other books such as ‘The Girl in the Fifth Floor Walk-Up’ and ‘Je ne sais quoi’ are collaborations with living artists Heather Malesson and Léa Simone Allegria. All of these books were featured in the blockbuster exhibition ‘Polaroids’ at the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin last year.” A brand-new photobook by Charles titled ‘So Long, Marianne’ (published by S_U_N_, New York) will be available at our booth. Find us in the Discovery section of the fair on the mezzanine level, stand J17. #PhotoLondon #CharlesJohnstone #contemporaryart

Excited for my latest book “So Long, Marianne” an homage to Marianne Faithfull . The book features screenshots from her breakout film, “The Girl on a Motorcycle”. Faithfull was better known as a singer with her first hit bring the Jagger/Richard song “As Tears go by”. My fifth artists book on actresses that I grew up with in the 60’s. All 5 books are made with expired Polaroid film, Japanese stab binding and French Fold paging. @s_u_n_

##photography #photo #art

What a great week in Newport, RI with the opening of “The Court: Art in Play”, at the Newport Museum Art Myseum . Beautifully curated by Freddy Adam and the amazing museum staff Danielle Ogden , Jeff Foye, Susan Hanley ,Harry Philbrick and the many other staff . Honored to show my work with some very talented artists, Bill Sullivan (also designed the poster) , Robert Manice, Joshua Mosley , Philip Howard, Elizabeth Curren and of course guest curator and artist Freddy Adam. So many friends came by too many to mention but a special thanks to Olga Yatskevich who made the trip from NYC and Marc Lewinstein who was very much involved in helping getting this exhibition made. @helka @mlewinstein @newportartmuseum @danielle.cavanna @billsullivanny @freddyphotograph

My “Briny Breezes” project photographed in the hot Florida summer months of 2004-2005 . Most shots were photographed in B&W , however I also shot a few photographs in color that were then made into Cibachrome prints. This work will be made into a book in the near future. Work not to be confused with “Briney Breezes” , which was a separate project with Aaron McElroy .

3 more pieces from Charles Johnstone from his recent book Basque Courts (S U N, 2024). These photographs, taken in the Basque region of France, capture the distinctive trinquet courts—an idiosyncratic and historical court style found throughout towns and cities in both the French and Spanish Basque regions. The series resulted from a two-year pilgrimage by Johnstone to locate and photograph these unique courts, which represent a unique architectural divergence from traditional court tennis 1) Charles Johnstone, 2022 Trinquet Court Pau, France, 2021 archival inkjet print 7.2” X 5.25”, framed 19” X 16.5”, edition 2 of 10 2) Charles Johnstone, 2023 Trinquet Court Pau, France, 2021 archival inkjet print 7.2” X 5.25”, framed 19” X 16.5”, edition 2 of 10 3) Charles Johnstone, Trinquet Court Leon Dongaitz, Urrugne, France, 2021 archival inkjet print 7.2” X 5.25”, framed 19” X 16.5”, edition 2 of 10 @charlesjohnstone @s_u_n_
