Olga Yatskevich on Balarama Heller: Returning to the Liminal in Sacred Place
“Heller’s biography is a fundamental force within his practice. Raised within the Hare Krishna movement in the United States, he spent much of his childhood engaging in the rituals and itinerant lifestyle of a devotional community. When Heller was just ten days old, his mother, herself a devoted practitioner, began a decade‑long nomadic journey through Hare Krishna communities across the country, establishing “moving” as the only stable constant in his early life. That early immersion (along with his eventual decision to leave) created a dual awareness that shaped his practice: the intimacy of someone who once belonged, and the distance of someone who stepped outside”.

The blur and distortion of these photographs are achieved with self-made optical devices, made of metal foil and mounted directly on the camera.
“Sfumato” is a painting technique of the Renaissance, softening the transition between colors, mimicking an area beyond what the human eye is focusing on, or the out-of-focus plane. Leonardo da Vinci was a prominent practitioner of Sfumato and implemented this technique with the Mona Lisa. He described Sfumato as „without lines or borders, in the manner of smoke“.

This book is one of my favorites!👹👻👺💀 “Gazu Hyakki Yagyo (The Illustrated Night Parade of a Hundred Demons)” by Toriyama Sekien
Toriyama Sekien drew many Yokai (I may say: Demons or Goblins) in form of encyclopedia. Each page illustrates and explains one Yokai. He made 4 books and each book in 3 volumes.
This book is a volume of 12 ancient books, each page photographed and explained in the original text (antique Japanese). Original text says the names of Yokai and their semblance, what they do and where they appear etc.
The text below the illustrations explains in modern Japanese, the origin of each Yokai, first present in the history and especially what they represent, what kind of phenomena caused the creation of such imagination.
