Here's a "Rodreel" - a Rod Oram digest, from the wonkish to the lofty - for anyone who's been missing Rod's voice over the last year, his calm and impeccable reasoning, his bone-deep faith in humanity's capacity for goodness. On this anniversary, it would mean so much if you could please share a memory of Rod - publicly or privately - a story, or a photo, or a recollection. ALSO - submission to the inaugural Rod Oram Memorial Essay Prize for Aotearoa writers under 25yo remains open until March 28th - please spread the word to the rangatahi in your life: https://newsroom.co.nz/2024/12/19/call-for-entries-rod-oram-memorial-essay-prize/ And for anyone who didn't know Rod - I am so proud to share with you a glimpse of my inimitable, irreplaceable Dad. Sorry the video's bit long - I guess it's more of a "Rodcast" - hard to pick out the best bits because Dad was, always, the best 💚

There is no Life or Death, Only activity And in the absolute Is no declivity. Marvelling in admiration for the @vokalensemble_zurich - and Peter Siegwart their conductor - who took care of many details great & small to give a gorgeous performance of a new piece of mine last month in Zürich at the @sonicmatterplatform festival. Went way down the rabbit hole with some numinous texts by Pseudo-Hadewijch (14thC) and (swipe for) Mina Loy (1882-1966) 💫 Very, very grateful for the generosity & encouragement of jurors Clara Ianotta, Björn Gottstein, Katharina Rosenberger, Germán Toro Perez and Peter Siegwart who awarded this piece the Christoph Delz prize. Thankyouuu also to @zhdk_icst for the amazing tech resources, @santivilma for the moody video, and @tiny.panther.recording for the tasty mix :) Here is a snippet of - as described by Peter the conductor - "die Licht von der Schöpfung" ⚡😅 (which is *funny* bc while I was composing this I was rehearsing Copland's In the Beginning with Cantori NYC, and I *do* think some of it seeped in...) Alse gevrijt in eweghen tijt onghescepen in stille wijt sonder crijt ombegrepen. As made free in eternal time, uncreated, in silent breadth, unbordered, ungrasped. for Dad, always 💚

📻 The most valuable piece of property worth owning at the dawn of the information age 📡 One of the nation state’s last remaining vestiges of real power 🛜 Leaden segmentary lines imposed by capitofeudalism 🌏 Absorb yourself in the GRIPPING HIGH DRAMA of spectrum allocation in my radio play “Citizens of Spectrum”, now on the Wave Farm website for your listening pleasure, 🔗link in bio🔗 and more at citizensofspectrum.xyz Three cheers 👏👏👏 and massive thanks to WGXC who aired this on Saturday. And a special chur to the legendary Gregory Whitehead who joined me in this operatically chaotic radio overture 🎭🎙️📡

it’s been a profound journey working with this exquisite late-14thC Pseudo-Hadewijch text and slowly unriddling its spiritual depths through music 🔮 (this is just the mockup, it will sound way better when Vokalensemble Zürich sings it!!!) 🇪🇺 EU friends, next year’s @sonicmatterplatform Festival 30 Jan - 2 Feb in Züri will be rad - I loved every moment of the last festival this time last year!! - come along and say Grüezi if you wanna hear more radio feedback choirs and beguine wisdom 📻🤘

Next week is my eagerly-awaited Radio Art Fellowship at @wavefarmradio where I will be camping out at a radio station amidst the Catskill autumn leaves 🍂🍁🍃 ALSO as Wave Farm's community engagement fellow I'm running online public workshops - that community includes 👉 YOU, dear friends, let's get engaged 😎 📡📻⚡️ 〰️〰️CITIZENS OF SPECTRUM, ASSEMBLE! Spectrum Management & the perennial political provocations of the electromagnetic field〰️〰️ 📡📻⚡️ There are two workshop sessions, hopefully timezone-optimized to enable global attendance — you gotta RSVP, spots are limited 📩 🗓 Friday, September 20: 3pm PDT / 6pm EDT / 8am Saturday AEST / 10am Saturday NZST 🗓 Saturday, September 21: 8am PDT / 11am EDT / 4pm BST / 5pm CEST More workshop info below, also 🔗 link in bio 🔗 📢📢 Calling all radionauts, wave artists, transmission enthusiasts, and utopists! This participatory workshop (via Zoom) introduces you to the realm of spectrum management: the overlapping forces of law, politics, economics & technology that shape the landscape of the electromagnetic spectrum, and thereby the lives of the citizens within it. Up and down the electromagnetic field, we communicate, express our selves, and forge relationships. Our very personhood is therefore bound up in our access to spectrum and its regulation. For 125+ years, the immaterial strangeness of the radio spectrum has mounted challenge after challenge to the “commonsense” around which our world is ordered: property, territory, the greater good. After all, what *is* spectrum? An invisible continent? common utility? precious natural resource? transcendent ether? Now as ever, the spectrum is a proving ground for the most urgent political re-calibrations of our time: the rights and powers of corporate bodies, the nature of the democratic nation-state, Indigenous sovereignty and decolonial governance, overlapping sovereignties within shared territorial environments. In deliberating together over the radio spectrum, may we also find a way to walk together on the earth.
