Exhibition: ECHOES OF A LOST GARDEN from December 20, 2025 to April 19, 2026 at Villa les Zéphyrs (Westende)
The garden of Villa Les Zéphyrs, once the largest in Westende, was sold in the 1960s and had to make way for a block of flats. The villa itself was spared, but today stands in stark contrast to its surroundings.
This exhibition brings the various aspects of that vanished garden back to life. The selected works do not restore a lost paradise, but form an imaginary garden, born from the memory that continues to resonate like an echo.
The works balance between matter and memory, between space and landscape. The exhibition is not driven by nostalgia or melancholy, but by a conscious activation of memory. A way of allowing the presence of the past to take root once more in the present.

De tuin van Villa Les Zéphyrs, ooit de grootste van Westende werd in de jaren zestig verkocht en moest plaatsmaken voor een appartementsblok. De villa zelf bleef gespaard, maar staat vandaag in schril contrast met haar omgeving.
Deze tentoonstelling brengt de verschillende aspecten van die verdwenen tuin opnieuw tot leven. De geselecteerde werken herstellen geen verloren paradijs, maar vormen een denkbeeldige tuin, geboren uit de herinnering die als een echo onophoudelijk blijft klinken.
De werken balanceren tussen materie en herinnering, tussen ruimte en landschap. De tentoonstelling is niet ontsloten vanuit nostalgie of weemoed, maar vanuit een bewuste activering van het geheugen. Een manier om de aanwezigheid van het verleden opnieuw te laten wortelen in het heden.

This work will be on view at the expo TIJDSGEEST, @Hofke van Chantraine, Oud-Turnhout from 15 march on , up to April 26. Open: Fri, Sat, Sun 13u30- 17u or on appointement. The pre-war graphic art comes from the rich private collection of Wim Flameng. It includes pieces by well-known graphic artists and woodcutters such as Kurt, Peiser, Armand Rassenfosse, Frans Masereel, Joris Minne, Edgard Tytgat, Jan-Frans and Jozef Cantré.
Eight contemporary visual artists engage in dialogue and represent the current zeitgeist. The exhibition is curated by Bie Flameng and Dirk Janssen.

Voor de tentoonstelling die loopt van 22 november 2025 t/m 1 maart 2026 heeft het Van GoghHuis als gastcuratoren Nadia Naveau en Nick Andrews uitgenodigd, twee kunstenaars uit Antwerpen en docenten aan de academie aldaar. Zij hebben een selectie gemaakt van kunstenaars met een nauwe band met Antwerpen en daarbij Hans Wuyts uitgenodigd als scenograaf.
De tentoonstelling brengt een diverse groep kunstenaars en alumni samen om de thema’s die Van Gogh inspireerden te verkennen en hedendaagse reflecties op zijn zoektocht binnen zijn kunstenaarspraktijk te presenteren. Net zoals Van Gogh destijds actief de dialoog met andere kunstenaars opzocht, benadrukt deze expositie het belang van samenwerking en culturele uitwisseling.

Caroline Coolen is een Belgische beeldend kunstenaar wier praktijk zich uitstrekt over sculptuur, assemblage, houtdruk en installatie.
In haar werk fungeert zij als een eigentijdse jager-verzamelaar, waarbij zij indrukken of fragmenten uit haar ‘Umwelt’ herschikt tot beelden die zowel visueel als tactiel rijk zijn. Ze richt haar blik op liminale zones — de randen van de wereld — waar distels, pioniersvegetatie en het ongeziene fungeren als metaforen voor, weerstand, veerkracht en een andere vorm van schoonheid.
In een tijd waarin zowel ecologische als culturele elementen onder druk staan en dreigen te verdwijnen, fungeert haar werk als een daad van aandacht, herstel en herwaardering. Door het gebruik van diverse materialen met een inherente betekeniswaarde, en door middel van technieken als collage, assemblage en vrije associatie, onderzoekt ze de potentie van het marginale en het over het hoofd geziene.
Haar werk ondermijnt dominante narratieven en maakt ruimte voor alternatieve vormen van waarde en representatie.

In my work, I act as a contemporary hunter-gatherer, rearranging impressions or fragments from my “Umwelt” into images that are both visually and tactilely rich. My focuses is on liminal zones — the edges of the world — where thistles, pioneer vegetation and the unseen serve as metaphors for resistance, resilience and a different form of beauty. At a time when both ecological and cultural elements are under pressure and threatened with extinction, my work serves as an act of attention, restoration and revaluation. Through the use of various materials with inherent meaning, and through techniques such as collage, assemblage and free association, I explore the potential of the marginal and the overlooked. Her work undermines dominant narratives and makes room for alternative forms of value and representation.
