This story is too serendipitous to not share. Sara at @foyer_gallery_rva sold my New Moon Compost painting to the loveliest woman with the most touching story.
This is Cindy on the left, sheās a Richmond local and gardening lover. Last Friday was the 1st year anniversary of her motherās death, Rose. Cindy was moved to tears over the metaphors of life and death within my compost painting. I canāt think of a more flattering and fulfilling moment and I donāt even have to be there to feel this connective energy. Just over the setting sun are two dried out roses that @mandragunziez gifted me years ago, heās great at giving bouquets. Itās hard not to think that the roses hold roots that connect us all-love/grief/sadness/creation. This is quite literally how art transcends and does more than just exist. Iām so incredibly happy Cindy has this work in her home, itās so much more than an exchange of goods.
āPost Break-Up Ducksā will be at FOYER GALLERYāS very first opening tonight! For First Fridayās on 16 West Broad street you can see Saraās new gallery 6-9pm. She is hosting a group show- THIS MUST BE THE PLACE- an exhibition about home.
I hope to see you there!

Break-Up Duck 2
Acrylic on panel
I typically create these elaborate sci-fi worlds in my head that I place my paintings in. Itās like a whole universe with multiple planets and many different worlds that set the scene for each moment. I always picture the location just before a human was there or minutes after they left.
This is how I use my own personal experiences to build a macrocosm of existence. In reality this is the fantasy world that I operate in on a regular basis. Iām a master at escapism. My paintings are very clearly self portraits of my mind. Sometimes I try to hide the narrative with cryptic symbols and complex story lines and sometimes I make paintings about ducks that I saw on my solo break up trip to West Virginia, restart that relationship and literally make three completely transparent paintings about it for the masses to ogle at.
Here is where I escape to when Iām in love, questioning love, confused, crying or horny. This natural landscape has the most romantic sunsets that fall upon the indifferent forest. For the forest will not answer your questions it will only remove the noise. The forest is strangely straight and sways in a way that makes you feel uneasy. The weather is extreme here but in captivating and sexy ways. Hail falls for short periods of time and then sun might step out just before she starts her rainbow display. Itās wet and mossy and you can walk from crispy sunlit air to a damp and cold nest in an instant. The constant jarring of the state of landscape mirrors the feeling of being in love with someone.
