In tech with Larissa FastHorse’s ballet sequence, a scene from her powerful and inspiring autobiographical solo work, FANCY DANCER, at Seattle Rep (co-production with Seattle Children’s Theatre). Performances start next week on September 18 through November 2. Please join us. Growing up half Lakota and half white, Lara lives as an outsider until she discovers the story of Osage prima ballerina Maria Tallchief and is compelled to become a dancer. But with a body that doesn’t quite conform, can she make her dream come true? A world premiere suitable for multigenerational audiences, this autobiographical coming-of-age play by renowned writer Larissa FastHorse (Broadway: The Thanksgiving Play) celebrates the power of perseverance and finding your community. Performed by alternating actors, this heartfelt solo show stars FastHorse herself and rising star Burgandi Trejo Phoenix, bringing to life this story filled with humor, resilience, and hope. Projection design is a fast-growing discipline that has widened the possibilities of design for the stage. This summer, SB2D was joined by Caite Hevner, who taught the projection design workshop. Caite is a projection and scenic designer known for her work on Between the Lines, Duke and Roya, and more. She is the founder of Caite Hevner Design, Inc, a female operated studio, committed to employing and supporting women and nonbinary artists. @caitehevner walked the SB2D students through some of her past designs and taught them how to use QLab to create their own projections. Over the last decade on Broadway, 82.6% of projection designers were male, 16.1% identified as female, and 1.3% were nonbinary.
