We are calling for contributions to an edited book exploring the impacts of artistic research and practice-based research PhDs upon creative practice. This book will be edited by myself and Jessica Wilkinson and Charles Anderson of RMIT University, and published by @valiz_books_projects .
In the last three decades, creative practice disciplines, such as art, design, architecture, creative writing, fashion, and others, have undergone a ‘research turn’ through their integration into the academy. The rise of artistic research or practice-based research is subtly transforming these disciplines. The integration of research into practice, however, has not always been smooth, and the transformations not unequivocally positive.

Our projects for @lunecroissant@great_wrap@future.future and @embla / Lesa will be on display in the Babel Bookcase exhibit curated by @BradHaylock , which showcases the work of 10 design studios from across Melbourne. The exhibit features a range of artifacts, posters, and book designs that offer a glimpse into the design and cultural practices that have influenced Melbourne’s creative landscape over the last decade.

The Moravian Gallery in Brno, the organiser of the Brno Biennial, announced on 24 April 2022 that it had “decided to abandon the regular exhibitions of the Brno Biennial and replace them with a sustainable permanent digital platform.”
Established in 1963, the International Biennial of Graphic Design Brno is one of the oldest and most important events in the field of visual communication worldwide. For almost six decades, the Brno Biennial has provided a major international platform for exhibitions, discussions, and relevant accompanying programmes on the dynamically expanding field of graphic design, an integral part of visual culture. In addition, the Biennial gave rise to an extensive collection of graphic design, a public archive systematically broadened with each edition. Designers from all over the world have repeatedly participated in each edition. At the same time, the Biennial is regularly attended by thousands, with many visitors coming to Brno from abroad. The Brno Biennial plays an invaluable role in education, as it influenced and formed whole generations of graphic designers who participated in its editions.
Graphic design is an integral part of the environment we live in. The Brno Biennial is the only cultural event of this kind, scope, and tradition worldwide. It facilitates a discourse in the field of visual culture accessible to everyone. The exclusively digital (and so far unspecified) platform that the Moravian Gallery attributes to the future of the Biennial cannot replace these in-person interactions and experiences.

About the book:
Fires burn around the world. Systemic discrimination persists, precarity is increasing, and the modern democratic project faces challenges from all sides. Art writing helps us to understand art which in turn helps us to understand such crises. But art writing itself is in crisis.
This volume presents contributions from a broad range of authors who address the social and political dimensions of art and art writing in the contemporary context, and the ways in which new writing and publishing practices promote critical engagement among readerships as never before.

Devastated to hear the news of the sudden passing of friend and colleague Damiano Bertoli. A few pre-internet years ago, a young graphic designer had an argument with his Finnish grandfather, a retired athlete. The designer asked about the 1940 Helsinki Olympics. His grandfather said they didn’t exist. The young designer thought his grandfather had gone senile — he was adamant that the event had happened. The stand-off was a dead end, because both were sure of their histories. But the young designer had relied on a poster he once saw for the 1940 Olympics, in an exhibition not unlike this one. A simple work of graphic design had created a parallel reality.
