Venice Biennale install post #2
…………………………………………….
Last September my son Milo and I drove up to Jeffery Gibson’s studio in Hudson NY to consult with his studio and the Site Santa Fe team on how best to create murals to wrap the inside and outside of the U.S. Pavilion for Jeffery’s exhibit “the space in which to place me” at the 60th Venice Biennale.
During the studio visit we demonstrated how we could print the mural designs as thin outlines on primed polytab* so that the murals could be painted in the studio and then installed onsite in Venice using Golden Mural Adhesive Gel.
In the following months Milo primed polytab and I printed and shipped the designs to Site Santa Fee to be painted. Everything was shipped to Venice and I joined the team in March to lead the install for the first week.
It was incredible to be part of such a special project alongside so many spectacular people.

Mural Provisions was founded by Volta Studio in 2016 as a way to share with others the priming and printing techniques on polytab that we developed working on large scale murals with public schools and communities in Philadelphia. Mural Provisions now partners with 100s of artists across the country and continues to develop a wide gamut of best practices for painting and printing on polytab.
*Polytab is a non-woven substrate. When saturated with masonry primer it becomes like a thin sheet of primer held together by tiny fibers that can be printed and painted on.

Mural projects are a journey, and this one truly brought a community together. What started as an idea to have the artist paint directly on the walls took a different turn — but with collaboration, creativity, and teamwork.
A huge thank you to Ben Volta and his teammate, Ivben Taqiy, for stepping in with such professionalism and heart. They brought the original vision to Cedar Rapids in record time, with complete respect for the artists work and vision. Now it’s here for all of us to enjoy.
This mural is more than just artwork — it’s a shared memory for our community. Come by and see it for yourself, and know that you’re part of the story too. 🌟

I have had a studio at Olivet Covenant Church for the past 21 years. A little over a year ago I began partnering with Olivet’s pastor Peter Ahn to start a youth and families open studio once a month. Yesterday we installed our first community project in celebration of Juneteenth.
The text panel reads:
These Truths
Our creative process began as we listened to Frederick Douglass’s speech, “What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?” read by his descendants. In 1776, the Fourth of July was a celebration of freedom for land-owning, free, White men. However, the Fourth of July did not include enslaved Africans, indigenous peoples, women, and other oppressed groups. Freedom was not for everyone.
The Fourth of July celebrates our first step toward becoming a sovereign nation, independence from England. Juneteenth is a critical landmark paving a trajectory toward liberation for all. However, the road to freedom is not yet complete, but is an ongoing journey. In the spirit of Ms. Fannie Lou Hamer’s assertion that, “Nobody’s free until everybody’s free,” this project was created to display our shared pursuit of freedom. These images invite us into a moment of meditation and call us to further action, together.
This project was made possible with the charitable funding of the Presbytery of Philadelphia. Art making was led by Church Studios resident artist, Ben Volta. The discussion, vision, and image collection was a collaborative venture with the children and families participating in Olivet’s Friday Youth and Family Night Open Studios.
We are grateful for the generosity of Keisha Whatley, Chip Thomas, I Witness Silwan and Ayman al Hossary who shared their artworks with us. We want to express a special thanks to Roger Allen of Fresh Artists who gifted their time, skill, and resources to transform our vision into reality.

Learn more about the making of the Promethean Sparks mural, on view through the end of 2024 at the NAS.
Students at the Alain Locke School in Philadelphia collaborated with artist and educator @benvolta and @muralarts to create this colorful mural inspired by scientific and mythological iconography in the NAS Great Hall. #100nasbuilding #cpnas
Last week @tiffanijsmithdraws and students from Alain Locke School in Philadelphia took an incredible trip to the National Academy of Sciences in Washington DC to visit our Promethean Sparks mural that we created together in partnership with @muralarts and @CPNAS . The room was filled with joy as the students got to meet NAS staff and see their work in embedded in the walls.
In the coming weeks we will begin fabricating a sister mural to be installed over the summer at the school!
Text REPOST from @CPNAS
Starting in the fall of 2023, the students worked with artist and educator @benvolta to imagine how scientific imagery in the NAS Building’s Great Hall—from the Prometheus mural by Albert Herter and the golden dome by Hildreth Meière —might look if recreated in the 21st century.
In collaboration with @cpnas and @muralarts , students merged diverse scientific symbols to create new imagery. This project empowered the students as creators and their collection of unique designs reflects a journey of experimentation, learning, and discovery. Their colorful mural is part of a range of activities the NAS has organized in commemoration of the centennial of the NAS Building which opened in April 1924. The mural is on view through the end of the year! #NASBuilding100
