Mural Provisions

Last September my son Milo and I drove up to Jeffery Gibson’s studio in Hudson NY to consult with his studio and the Site Santa Fe team on how best to create murals to wrap the inside and outside of the U.S. Pavilion for Jeffery’s exhibit “the space in which to place me” at the 60th Venice Biennale. During the studio visit we demonstrated how we could print the mural designs as thin outlines on primed polytab* so that the murals could be painted in the studio and then installed onsite in Venice using Golden Mural Adhesive Gel. In the following months Milo primed polytab and I printed and shipped the designs to Site Santa Fee to be painted. Everything was shipped to Venice and I joined the team in March to lead the install for the first week. It was incredible to be part of such a special project alongside so many spectacular people. …………………………………. Mural Provisions was founded by Volta Studio in 2016 as a way to share with others the priming and printing techniques on polytab that we developed working on large scale murals with public schools and communities in Philadelphia. Mural Provisions now partners with 100s of artists across the country and continues to develop a wide gamut of best practices for painting and printing on polytab. *Polytab is a non-woven substrate. Mural projects are a journey, and this one truly brought a community together. What started as an idea to have the artist paint directly on the walls took a different turn — but with collaboration, creativity, and teamwork. A huge thank you to Ben Volta and his teammate, Ivben Taqiy, for stepping in with such professionalism and heart. 🐠Coral reefs felt like the perfect metaphor to reflect the vibrant + diverse student body for this mural at Vineland High School. During my WheatonArts residency, students reflected on their own origin story, culture + perspective to inspire the design. Student photos are embedded into the mural itself as water bubbles, swimming fish and other marine life. Allowing their identities to seamlessly blend within the painted ecosystem. Can’t wait to use this technique again! Truly love how this project turned out and its impact on the entire school community. Short answer: Love love loved it! 🥰 Long answer: keep scrolling! ⬇️ POLYTAB: a mural cloth that can be painted offsite and installed, like wallpaper, indoors and outdoors. It’s an awesome alternative for weather and if you have a space where you don’t have the luxury of time and it needs to be installed in one day. You can buy it but the roll or you can buy it pre-primed with a ghost print, like I did. ⚡️I had it ghost printed by Ben Volta @muralprovisions (thanks Ben! You rock!!🤘) ⚡️THE DESIGN: I got this mural requests from a past client who creates luxury short term rentals (I did the trolley- ybor mural for them several years ago) I IMMEDIATELY thought of Adrienne. She was an amazing collaborator and created the reference even better than I imagined. Please follow her if you aren’t already! @adrienneeluther MATERIALS: ⚡️The recommended adhesive is nova gel or an acrylic gel medium. Downside is the nova gel dries sooooo fast. My installer had another interior acrylic gel medium that he recommended as well. ⚡️I used interior latex paint and sealed it because it’s the front entrance of an Airbnb and smudgy hands may touch it. Because it was pre-primed I didn’t prime it. ⚡️INSTALL I hired Vinny from @vw_wallpaper to install it at the job site. I wanted it to look perfect and called in an expert! 🩶🤍🩶🤍 REPOST: @annamraz__ The making of this massive interior pastoral grisaille mural! I used a combination of mural cloth from @muralprovisions and painting directly on the wall for this. The large stairwell wall would have been impossible to project onto, and any painting would require a lot of up and down a pretty tall ladder. So I cut sheets that would fit the wall, mapped out my design, and painted these sections in studio. 💚🖤💚🩶 REPOST @code_stool About two months ago, a fellow Philly artist (@nagati12 ) asked if I would help install her wing wall mural at the Linc. Me being a lifelong Birds man and all, I enthusiastically said yes. We put up the mural, and it was beautiful, and while I was there I met the Eagles director of marketing — the man responsible for commissioning the murals. I told him how I grew up idolizing Randall and Reggie, and later McNabb and all them dudes, and that I myself am a hard-working artist and would love to do my own mural at the Linc. I gave him my number and went about my business. Well, believe it or not, he hit me up a few weeks ago and asked if I would like to do the winter holiday themed wing wall mural. I got right to work, and somehow immediately came up with an idea that I liked. I submitted it and hoped for the best. A few days later, the Birds approved it “as is.” The next two weeks were stressful. There was a lot to be done and not much time. Fortunately, I have some awesome friends in the arts community and elsewhere, and a few of them showed up and did outstanding work to help get the job done. Special thanks to wescombe_art, @kekahot21 , and my brother Jared. They painted beautifully in the studio, and I couldn’t have gotten it done without them. Special thanks to @muralprovisions , always connecting me with cool artists and helping me (& all the other artists) get the job done. Extra special thanks to @rosyrosirose , who did great work in the studio — and outside when it was like 38°🥶. And extra extra special thanks to fellow Birds diehard @matty_on_earth , aka Matty Ice, aka Yoga Matt, who worked hard in the studio AND installed the mural outside with me on a day when the wind was howling and the temp was barely above freezing 🥶🥶. Finally, thanks to the Eagles organization, for spending some money to give local artists a platform and a paycheck. And for spending some money to get Saquon.
