“It’s comforting to believe that there are things greater than ourselves. Whether you’re speaking to the universe, or God, to a Buddha, there’s this comfort there. So, when I say a prayer now, it’s very open-ended. You can be praying to God, nature. It’s a form of asking too. There’s this immediacy to being able to ask the universe for something. It starts off by thinking, “What’s the harm of choosing to believe?” Once you open up to it, it becomes more of a practice. Once it becomes more of a practice you start to feel reciprocity with the ideas. The ideas start to speak back. They begin to influence how you move about the world.”
During research for our conversation, I found myself drawn to the images of his exhibitions rather than individual works. Looking at these again, there are two primary differences that are coming into focus. The first is seeing his work in conversation with other pieces. Just as Jeffrey Gibson speaks about communing with something larger, it seems that his art is at its most powerful when viewed as part of the whole. The quotes he embroiders or otherwise includes (often a mix of historical events and lyrics from his favorite ‘80s hits) seem to sing together or become a collage of something more.
Gibson’s work manifests across almost any media you can imagine. He does fabric, sculpture, video. He includes commissions from other artists. He invites dancers and musicians to perform at his exhibitions, extending the meaning of his art into their own work.

433 feet in 30 seconds — A sweeping view of THIS BURNING WORLD (2026) by Jeffrey Gibson, as the final sections are being installed.
Spanning an entire city block on Mission Street, in one of downtown San Francisco’s most active arts and cultural corridors.
Here, Gibson reconfigures stills from his original 60-foot-wide video installation of the same name, first presented by ICA SF in 2022, into a tapestry-like field that underscores the urgency of our relationship to the planet while affirming the power of art to foster connection and shared civic experience.

Join me and performer Brandi Norton for a special, large-scale performance gathering that unfolds within Jeffrey Gibson’s incredible exhibit: POWER FULL BECAUSE WE’RE DIFFERENT.
We’ll pay attention to another scale, another form, another knowledge. We’ll traverse together. We’ll listen to stories and provocations transmitted from artists across territories and First Nations. We’ll take in the sounds of famed DJ Dat Gurl Curly, from the Lower East Side. And we’ll gather on and amongst 84 hand-stitched quilts — a 4,000 square-foot design created over the past decade by hundreds of volunteers over multiple geographies.
An extension of care itself, designed by Ojibwe artist Maggie Thompson, cared for by Korina Emmerich, Nishina Loft, and Anne Pesata, and activated through our performances, the quilts reflect a collective vision toward better futures. They hold a record of historic actions alongside personal histories, migrations, and dreams. You’ll be invited to take part by adding your ideas to this monumental project: what are your non-negotiable care actions? How do we defend land in a city? How do we disrupt the misuse of the terms: great, free, he, she, illegal, migrant, border?
