Over the next couple of months, a new mural honoring the life and legacy of Paul “Unk P” Gripper will go up at 2600 Ridge Avenue. Streets Dept will have more about that mural as it’s created, but today we want to remind you about the value of work like this. Because, projects like these created through @MuralArts go well beyond paint on walls.
This is a fact that’s especially important to remind ourselves now as City Council and the Mayor decide on whether to fully fund Mural Arts in their next budget.
If you’re interested in encouraging City Council to fund Mural Arts fully, be sure to follow the @FriendsOfMuralArts account and go to the link in their bio to reach out to your City Council member today over email, call, and/or written letter. The ask is simple: Fully Fund Mural Arts in the next budget!
Special thanks to the speakers in this video: Keisha Whatley (@customartsstudio ), Kirby Ames, @NileLivingston , and Naima Gripper (@dominica14 ) and Ashley Gripper (@doctafarmer ) of @teamgripper .

#24Lesson: Things happen FOR me; not TO me.
The Water Shed - Waterway Arts Initiative, PWD (@phillyh2o ), Mural Arts (@muralarts ) + Academy of Natural Sciences (@acadnatsci ) Project
Maaaaaaaaan, I could write a whole year’s worth of lessons and experiences about this one! THIS ONE challenged me in just about every angle possible… like balancing a firetuck on your big toe while juggling flaming knives… but get through it I did while learning this year’s lesson many times over along the way.
Without getting into specifics, here are some of the contexts and environments that this year-long Project Management contract included:
>>> Working with 2 professionals that are used to being project managers… yep, TWO!
>>> Being new in the Project Manager role with this organization (lots of processes and new contexts to learn)
>>> Working with a Creative Team of NINE personalities and work styles;
>>> Working with FOUR different TYPES of sub-groups of people (PWD team, Artists, Community Members and Scientists!)
>>> Tasked with getting the project from ideation to manifestation within 11 months;
>>> Learning to take off my Artist Mentor hat and stay strictly in my Project Management role;
Needless to say, in the midst of all of the other contracts and studio work, this project was a DOOZY but it was also WORTH IT… as the culminating deliverable was a storefront resource center for residents of Germantown who experience flooding in their homes and businesses. The team created ‘The Water Shed’ located at 5300 Wayne Avenue (at the corner of Wayne and Queen Lane) which includes a beautiful art installation by visual artist team Kaitlin Pomerantz and Naomieh Jovin, educational resources and programming with the Academy of Natural Sciences.

“UNK”, Paul Gripper Mural Project
When this project was offered to me, I had a hunch that it would be special… a project that highlights a community-impacting individual, Paul Gripper, lost to health issues some years ago. When the project manager reached out at the end of summer, he shared that he would love the project to be done in time for Mural Arts Month (October) and while that was definitely “pushing it,” I told him that we could, if the design was ready for production we could plan a community paint day event.
I fell in love with the design as soon as I opened the file! It was vibrant and energetic and exciting! I got to work prepping the design for what we call “ghostprinting” on mural cloth - this enables the design to be printed on the cloth, we can paint it in the studio and install it like exterior wallpaper… one problem though… after hours of file prep time, it became increasingly clear that the design was NOT to scale with the wall!!
I met with the mural designer and project manager to discuss and plan the next steps… First line of business was to get the design to match the ratio of the wall. When I did my own overlay, the design would be either too narrow with excess wall on both sides or the slope of the roof cut off a major part of the design! That just WON’T DO for such an important project.
The designer took their approved design and reworked it to fit the wall’s dimensions and our studio began plans to start production over the winter months (instead of trying to kill ourselves to get it done by the end of October!)...
While I would have loved to celebrate completing this project before winter of this year, it is almost like the universe knew me well enough to know that I would’ve literally hurt myself to get it done… and put enough barriers in the way to ensure I didn’t.
Things happen FOR me; not TO me.
