This is an artist talk in a book. It’s 816 pages and 49 minutes long.  Closed captions run across the spreads.  A video is on bendenzer.com/making-then-meaning (link in bio) My time at @risd_gd has led me to new friends, new tools, and new bodies of work. It’s also pushed me to reflect and to write. I spend my days making things, but I’ve never really had good answers to questions of why I make the things I make, or what their meaning is. I don’t think there are simple answers to these questions. This talk is an attempt to make some sense of my work and myself. An attempt to describe what I think and believe about the things I make. I’m so grateful to all the people who have shaped me at RISD these past two years. My teachers and advisors. Everyone at @risd_gd And most of all my cohort @harshalduddalwar, @lianreay, @decreation_studio, @sereebee, @iankeliher, @minakim.design, @karanleomes, @alim.db, @sunhoslee, Moritz, @jennoughton, @joey_llc, @zpulley, @sadiaaa, @shapesbyshiney, @ischmaedecke, @jack.tufts I’ll really miss being in Providence with you all.

For the past two years I’ve been working on an MFA at @risd_gd. It’s been a really great time. As a requirement for graduation, each MFA candidate produces a thesis book to be archived in the library. I think the graduate thesis, as a form, is a bit of a spectacle, a performance of academic accomplishment. Leaning into this, I made a thesis book that’s bigger than the RISD library. It’s 200 x 125 ft when opened. Drone documentation thanks to @sizod Link in bio has more drone documentation, photos of the book’s construction, and a long list of the people who helped make it a reality.

️ I’m starting a new publication at @parsons_cd called Process Pamphlets and we’re launching it at @printedmatterinc on Tuesday April 7th (6-8pm)! Open to all! ️ ️ Each issue of Process Pamphlets presents a single project from start to finish. ️ Through emails, sketches, screenshots, drafts, and a first-person running narration, each issue aims to transparently show how things are made in the world; how people find work, initiate projects, organize, communicate, collaborate, negotiate, experiment, make, iterate, edit, distribute, document, and share. ️ First five issues are by @bdenzer, @shira_no_filter, @andrewleclair, @eli8527, and @elopez12! ️ ️ Multiple issues will be published each fall and spring semester.  ️ Issues can be purchased for $10 at Printed Matter (which means we get $5 for each, which funds production). ️ For institutions looking to acquire a subscription, please email me at denzerb@newschool.edu ️ ️ Hope to see you at the @printedmatterinc launch! ️
