Oops didn’t post anything this year!
But this was one of my favorite projects I worked on back in April for the Modern Love issue. The 16 first messages between couples, compiled and edited by @kate_larue hilariously illustrated by @tarabooth 🔥
An all hands on deck endeavor with extra help from @gailbichler@vescobar.studio@jmyint@laurenfoxx and @nytmag team.
Ten years ago I volunteered to bake the desserts for my friends’ wedding, including THE cake. I knew exactly how this cake should look, but not at all really how to bake it. My stepmother Pam humored me as I asked delusional questions like how many pans did she have that I could use? And how big does a cake need to be to feed 80 people — three tiers? All the while she was purchasing icing kits, doing baking tests to get the exact right coloring, and making over four dozen cookies as a backup in case the cake failed.
When I finally arrived in California with a broken cake stand in my luggage and no idea what I was doing, she pulled out six beautiful pre-frozen rainbow layers that we were able to assemble, frost and coat in sprinkles to perfection. And while I probably should have been made to feel like an idiot for what I had oversold to my friends, I actually had a lot of fun. Without judgement, Pam had a plan and let me act like I had one too. She was so generous about the whole thing, but also able to laugh about it and have a good time in spite of the stupidly stressful circumstances.
I wanted to share this story about Pam because she passed away a week ago after a few years battling dementia, and that’s really all you can do when something like this happens.
So now my friends will know, I didn’t really bake their cake by myself or really at all. It was Pam.
She was important and gave so much. She made my father very happy. I’m thankful for all of it. ❤️
a goodbye for my baby, my bestie, a big solid chunk of my personality. I was so lucky to come home to you for fourteen years and wish it could’ve been forever. ❤️
Lucky to have had the opportunity to work on the digital presence of this very special photo portfolio from the end of the year’s @nytmag The Lives They Lived issue.
This piece featured the collections of seven creative titans who passed away in 2023 with photography by @richardbarnes and words by @axwwxa . A little digi cabinet of curiosities housed them online.
While each collection is beautifully human and worth exploring, I have to highlight one in particular from a personal idol and mentor who we lost last year: Carin Goldberg. Her way of seeing was so influential to so many of us (hello fellow Carin students!) and I’m so happy that her impeccable taste could be celebrated here.
“Curating enables me to remember, communicate, interpret and eventually conquer a place where I am unable to claim citizenship.” - Carin Goldberg ❤️
Incredible work by the photo team @kathyryan@kristen.geisler@roryannaw to put this together and thanks as always to @gailbichler@kate_larue@jmyint and also @clauisru who designed the amazing print issue.
Another one from the backlog: a demented little illustration for the Sunday NYT Opinion page, featuring the ladies of The View. Thanks to AD @damiensaatdjian & @mr_augugliaro 🌀😁🌀😁🌀
