NEW EPISODE - this is the final episode from the New York salon, with @kathyryan recorded live at @icp For three decades, Kathy Ryan, the longtime director of photography at The New York Times Magazine, pioneered her own vision for visual storytelling. Her signature approach to masterful commissioning was rooted in unexpected cross-assignment, blurring boundaries between genres and creating space for photography to be interpretive and elaborate -  a powerful voice unto itself. Kathy is an icon. She has truly had more impact than any other magazine director of photography in our time. Within photography circles, she is a genuine legend. Now, as she enters a new era of her career as an artist, curator and educator, I wanted to talk to Kathy about her new chapter and what it means to shift from the role of directing images to making them herself. I also wanted to speak to her, now she is untethered from an institution, about her take on the future of storytelling and the role of the photographer in preserving history, challenging misinformation, and safeguarding the integrity of our shared narratives. Episode now available on Apple and Spotify. Huge thanks to @kathyryan @davidcampany and the whole team @icp

Kathy Ryan was the longtime director of photography at the New York Times Magazine. For nearly four decades, Ryan shaped the way we witnessed history: January 6th, wars abroad and the impacts of COVID-19 and 9/11 We’ll talk with Ryan about storytelling through images. And we’ll discuss what makes a good photograph when we’re inundated by them, now that so many of us carry a camera in our pockets. We want to hear from you: What’s a photograph that stands out in your mind? 📸: Kathy Ryan; Inez and Vinoodh #kqednews #interview #photography #blackandwhitephotography #coverimage #visuals #bnw

Legendary photo editor @kathyryan has helped shape our understanding of the world by commissioning and curating some of the most significant images marking pivotal moments in our history, blending fine art photography with photojournalism. As former Director of Photography at The New York Times Magazine, she has worked with the world’s best photographers across all genres, while regularly bringing new talent into the magazine’s pages. Among her notable work is "Office Romance" (Aperture, 2014), a poetic tribute to light, architecture, and the quiet beauty of everyday moments inside The Times building. Photographed in the landmark Renzo Piano-designed building, "Office Romance" is Ryan’s love song to her office life, highlighting the luminous beauty she encountered in her daily routine. Photos: @kathyryan ... Featuring keynote speaker @kathyryan , the CatchLight Visual Storytelling Summit returns to San Francisco on May 3, 2025. This year’s theme, Photographic Memory, explores how images and archives shape personal, societal, and cultural memory. The CatchLight Visual Storytelling Summit is presented with generous support from our education partner @photowings , with additional support from @mpbcom .
