For many Lane County residents, the Bureau of Land Management is not a distant agency but a neighbor managing thousands of acres intertwined with private land and daily life. Now, a Trump administration proposal to sharply increase logging on those lands is drawing public scrutiny. Biologists and volunteers gathered April 3, 2026, on Tybee Island, Georgia, to remove Eastern box turtles from the future site of Solomon Park, a seven-acre maritime forest. Teams from Oatland Island Wildlife Center, Turtle Survival Alliance, Tybee Island Marine Science Center, and community volunteers collected turtles for temporary care at Oatland Island until they can be returned.
