Nuchi Nashoba, president of the Choctaw Code Talkers Association and great-granddaughter of code talker Ben Carterby, stands in front of a historical marker unveiled April 1, 2026, at Veterans Memorial Park in Fort Worth, Texas. The plaque honors 19 Native American soldiers who used their language to send encrypted messages to Allied forces during campaigns in northern France, a role they were sworn to keep secret and did not share with their families for decades. 🔗 See the full story by David Moreno at the link in the @catchlight.io bio. For many Lane County residents, the Bureau of Land Management is not a distant agency but a neighbor managing thousands of acres intertwined with private land and daily life. Now, a Trump administration proposal to sharply increase logging on those lands is drawing public scrutiny. In the region’s “checkerboard” forests, residents, loggers, and landowners are weighing potential economic benefits against environmental concerns and long-term forest health. 🔗 See the full story by @ashlireports at the link in the @catchlight.io bio. Gonzales is one of many private landowners who lives within a grid of public and private land in the Coast Range. // Eisler and Gonzales enter their lumber storage shed. (3) A sun-dappled tree sits on the edge of Gonzales’ property. // Lumber is stacked at Gonzales and Eisler’s mill. (4) Gonzales stands at his mill. // Ferns grow tall in the land surrounding Gonzales’ home. Gonzales has been taking his kids on hikes through his private land and neighboring BLM land for years. (5) As neighbors, Eisler owns the mill and Gonzales owns the tractor used to do the logging. (6) Gonzales walks paths on his land.

John Fischer sits with leeks in his garden on Feb. 26, 2026, in Eugene, Oregon. Despite the winter lull in produce, Fischer still eats from his garden every day. He explains how healthy vegetable gardens begin below the surface, where soil microorganisms play a critical role in making nutrients available and supporting plant growth. Biologists and volunteers gathered April 3, 2026, on Tybee Island, Georgia, to remove Eastern box turtles from the future site of Solomon Park, a seven-acre maritime forest. Teams from Oatland Island Wildlife Center, Turtle Survival Alliance, Tybee Island Marine Science Center, and community volunteers collected turtles for temporary care at Oatland Island until they can be returned. Once relatively common across the eastern United States, including in urban areas like Savannah, box turtles have declined and are listed as endangered in some states. 🔗 See the full story by Mary Landers at the link in the @catchlight.io bio.
