Join us and Printed Matter (@printedmatterinc ) at Frieze New York on Friday, May 15 at 2 PM for a book signing with Lee Mary Manning (@leemarymanning ) on the occasion of their most recent catalog, 'Kiss of the Sun.' The signing will take place in the Shed bookstore, located at the fair’s entrance at 545 West 30th Street.
Nine of Manning's photographs and assemblages are on view at our Frieze NY presentation at Booth C1.
Now on view through June 23 — Present Tense, a new window installation by sgp @__s.gp
This circumstance-specific installation responds to the scaffolding that has ensconced Printed Matter’s Chelsea storefront since last spring, and takes the organization’s history of window installations as a point of departure. Interpolating an original slide image of a window installation from the archives, sgp leverages her insider/outsider status as an artist who is also part of the Printed Matter Fairs and Editions team and a Union member.
The original installation, created by Cynthia Chris, includes text recounting the 1985 MOVE bombing in which the Philadelphia Police Department, in an act of state sanctioned violence, dropped an improvised explosive device on the headquarters of the Black liberation organization MOVE. Chris' text concludes “a precedent has been set.”
Forty-one years later, sgp has printed the image on industrial mesh PVC fabric traditionally used as trompe-l'oeil coverings to camouflage scaffolding on buildings. Present Tense triangulates the visitors to Printed Matter between Past and Future Tenses. The scaffolding, scheduled to come down at the midpoint of the installation, acts as a foil to the interior window installation, which uses a scaffolding ladder as a bookshelf for a selection of publications on PSY-OPs, infrastructural critique, surveillance and resistance, I.C.E., the politics of privately owned public spaces, culture jamming, and more.

Charlotte Winkler: Like a Mad Gardener
from @coloramaprint in Berlin
A prickly palm tree speaks from a London back garden while scissors hold a conference, weeds laugh and guardian angels protect fences. In the warm earth hands roll over with worms and friends get to work.
This book is an attempt to get to the root of stories about borders, power, care, belonging, and otherness, and to understand what it means to garden.
Part of the Colorama literary series 12x18, Living Loving Literaturing from the intertext. -Publisher

Tom Jennings: HOMOCORE Anthology
HOMOCORE was a queer punk zine, published in San Francisco from September 1988 through Spring 1991. This paragraph on the first page of every issue may be the best introduction. No apology for 1988 cringe:
“You don’t have to be a homo to have stuff published in HOMOCORE. One thing everyone in here has in common is that we’re all social mutants; we’ve outgrown or never were part of any of the ‘socially acceptable’ categories. You don’t have to be gay; being different at all, like straight guys who aren’t macho shitheads, women who don’t want to be a punk rock fashion accessory, or any other personal decision that makes you an outcast is enough. Sexuality is part of it, but only part.” -Publisher

Gus van Sant: Paintings
The first monograph on American filmmaker and photographer Gus Van Sant’s paintings offers a broad overview of his works. Sequenced in an associative manner rather than chronologically, the book features different series and focuses on recurring motifs and themes throughout different mediums and across his entire oeuvre.
The publication is bound inside out, with a cover comprising two test screenprints (signed and stamped on the back), alluding to Van Sant’s painting practice as literally the flipside of his well-known career in film. Additionally, there is an essay by Rhode Island School of Design professor Dennis Congdon and an interview with Van Sant. -Publisher

Three questions with the man that needs no introduction, Printed Matter’s very own Craig Mathis @_craigmathis . We caught him at “a good of a time as any” and we’d like to clarify that he is not picking favorites! @printedmatterinc@printedmatter_artbookfairs
mentioned:
@gongpress
Coral Dictionary, @yuchenyuchen
hard liver notes: Craig and I met in person for the first time at the Printed Matter store in Chelsea, NY a few years ago. He gave me an awesome collection of printed ephemera and showed me some rare Ulises Carrion publications. Last year, he mailed me a box of Printed Matter ephemera, program books and ticket editions which I shared online. Everyone who knows Craig, knows he loves printed matter… but more than that, he has an ability to share printed matter with those around him in a way that feels personal, authentic and genuine. His dedication doesn’t stop at print but extends beyond… to all the people in the print community. Thank you Craig for all that you do!

Three questions with Zolt from Test Strip @teststrip.iso at the Printed Matter LA Art Book Fair @printedmatter_artbookfairs@printedmatterinc
hard liver notes: My one year anniversary of discovering Test Strip was this time last year at the PM LAABF. I immediately subscribed to receive an issue and a limited print in the mail every month. Since the first issue, my favorite part has been discovering a new artist every month and even see a friend ( @ethnming ) be featured in an issue. Looking forward to more discovery and more fun with Test Strip!
