We’re looking for:
- an experienced full-time pastry baker for our Burlingame location (hourly)

We’re looking for self-motivated kind people that are passionate about excellent pastries, bread, and coffee, and creating a welcoming warm atmosphere, both for our customers and our teams.
We offer competitive pay, 100% health insurance, dental, paid time off, paid parental leave, 401k with vested contributions.

As a family business with two locations and a team of nearly 60 people, we’ve had to make the difficult decision to remain open during tomorrow’s national shutdown. Closing for a full day would have a direct financial impact on our staff and our ability to continue operating, and that responsibility weighs heavily on us.
That said, we stand in solidarity with communities across the country and will be donating 100% of tomorrow’s operating profit to the ACLU in support of that work.
If you know a small business that is closing as part of the strike, please consider supporting them this weekend—stop by, buy a gift card, or tip their team if you’re able. The costs of running a small business have never been higher, and choosing to close for the day is a real and meaningful sacrifice that directly affects the people behind the counter and in our community.
If you have enjoyed our Baby Poppyseed Babkas on the weekends lately, you’ll probably be excited to hear that you can get a family sized version of it as part of our holiday pre-orders!
Our Spooky Cookie Boxes are available for pre-order.
4 Almond Linzer Ghosts with Raspberry Jam
4 Triple Chocolate Monster Cookies
4 Pumpkin Spice Snickerdoodles

Slippers are back. Friday through Sunday at both locations. Starting out strong with this version from the brain of @_flourgirl :
Walnut basil pesto, organic Early Girl tomatoes from @resendizfruitbarn , Fontina.
Backhaus in downtown Burlingame is that bakery—the one where there’s already a line forming before the doors even open. And once you taste what’s coming out of their ovens, you get it.
The croissants are perfectly flaky and rich. The sourdough? Still warm, with that perfect crust. And the pastries—they go beyond the usual. Think corn, pistachio, and raspberry in ways you didn’t know you needed. Every bite is thoughtful, seasonal, and full of flavor.
And if you’re not near Burlingame? Their original location in downtown San Mateo has all the same magic.

We had so much fun at the “SF’s Best Croissant” competition yesterday.
Huge thanks to @french.morning@frenchlydoesit and @letsapero for putting together this wonderful event and to @beurremont_butter for sponsoring.
What an unexpected honor to win second place!
So much love and respect to the other nine amazing bakeries who participated and congratulations to the other winners:
🥇 @maisonbenoit.us
🥉 @maison_nico@themidwifeandthebaker for winning People’s Choice
@le.carousel.patisserie for Best Original Creation
Anyone who makes croissants knows how difficult it is to do it well, especially getting great results consistently. (Any of the many incredible bakeries in the Bay Area who make excellent croissants are worthy of being celebrated for their hard work.)
Room, fridge, and freezer temperature, variations in flour and butter parameters are just some of the things that make it a challenge every single day. At the skill level that everyone at this competition has, it truly comes down to personal preference paired with who just happened to have a better couple of days in the bakery while prepping for the event.
Any matter of taste is of course highly subjective and there is no definitive objectively “Best” of any food item. That being said, it sure is fun to get out of your everyday rut to “compete” and celebrate our craft, and it feels good to be recognized.
We are so proud of our amazing pastry team and thankful for the incredible work ethic and commitment they bring to Backhaus every day. You all truly deserve this!
Last but not least, of course a big thank you to our customers who nominated us for the competition in the first place.
