French v.s. American film ratings systems 🔞🎥🎞️ France and the U.S. both have film rating systems, but they judge “age appropriateness” very differently. French film ratings are simpler than the U.S. system and focus less on strict content rules. There are four main categories: Tous publics (TP) for all audiences, -12, -16, and -18, which restrict viewers under those ages. In the U.S., we have G, PG, R, and NC-17. You may think that TP would be the equivalent of G, but it’s a little more nuanced than that. As many American films with nudity and profanity are rated R, the same film in France could be rated Tous publics (suitable for all).
