Towards the end of last year I spoke with @metal_magazine about the release of my EP CONTROL, but as all good conversations do, it ended up being about so much more... 👁️🗨️🔮👁️🗨️
We freewheeled all the way from the specific equipment i use to produce music, the ancient scriptures that decree ‘let he who has never before crashed out cast the first stone’, crying on stage for Wish You Were Here, the experience of juggling so many creative endeavours, We Are Lady Parts and how much I LOVE Ayesha, the experience of wrestling with your own inner beast of perfectionism and the scars that can leave you with, the increase of sickkkkk SWANA events in London, DJing, self-directing a music video, shouting out my pals and the strange artistic reciprocity we keep dashing at each other’s heads, the mulchy allegories and symbolism of the Salaryman in CONTROL… it got really real, and it’s honestly one of my fave interviews i’ve ever done. north london forever.🪬🫦🪬

I’ve waited a really long time to say this: CONTROL the EP will be out on 21/11/24‼️
It’s been a rough road littered with the spoils of perfectionism and obsession but i’m finally ready to let this creepy EP out into the big bad world. CONTROL is a fairytale of loss and victory in a city that offers isolation and abundance in extremes. This project was a long hard look at myself, where I had to strip back layers of bravado, personas crafted and discarded to reveal something raw n something real. I also wanted to show a little of where I’m at now, not just as a singer n songwriter, but a producer also.
To be honest, this EP came initially as a war cry against those who may underestimate you, but somehow ended up being a self-reflexive mirror, one that shows all the harsh cracks and hard limits of trying to hold it all together by force.
as always though, i couldn’t have done this by myself and the biggest love to everyone who helped make this EP a reality ❤️🔥

CONTROL is about feeling the loss of something you never had. About knowing that there’s something more, cracking and peeking back at you at the edges of your daily mundanity. The salaryman is trapped in the amber of his routine, endlessly repeating it as it collapses around him.
Somewhere between consuming its soothing balm and raging against its stifling boundaries, the salaryman can’t help but be a product of the environment he has created for himself. His world fractures around him, becoming monstrous and darting away before anyone can get a good look.
There’s a soaring freedom that comes with letting go of CONTROL, and an abject hopelessness in realising you never had any.

In early January, and under the cover of an internet blackout, the Iranian people faced one of the worst state crackdowns on civilian uprising in Iran’s modern history. In the wake of this massacre and the ongoing ramifications for those back home, I’m highlighting the music of both Iranian’s in Iran and the diaspora, intermingled with excerpts from Nahid Rezaie’s 2003 documentary ‘Dreams of Silk’. The documentary is available to watch online and I’d highly recommend it. It’s eerie to see how much and how little has changed over the years.
It has been a hard, unbearable start to the year for so many of us, and even more strange to navigate such complex feelings of grief and rage being so far from home and our families. Especially when political chess moves from the Diaspora risk drowning out the voices of those who have put everything on the line to be heard. It’s feels impossible to explain the climate of Iran to those who have never visited, the joy and abundance - sure. But harder to describe is the psychic weight of constant defeat that burdens people, the daily injustices loved ones face, the way small necessities have slowly disappeared from sofrehs. I still find it hard to know what to say, how to say it, how to feel. I am proud, I am tired, and I am so far away from the people I love. I miss it all, and they tell me there’s nothing left to miss.
Though the online noise is quieter now, in Iran, the struggle still rages on as it has done for years, in homes, in prisons, in classrooms all across Iran, from Tehran to Baluchistan, Isfahan to Bandar Abbas. 40 days have passed and I see such defiance with each Chehelom, grief and rage and pride. I hope one day for a self-determined, free Iran. A free Iran for all.

2025 was absolutely manic. Feeling so grateful for all the friends I laughed with, countries I bounced around, cameos i made, and all the music I played + put out. I did things this year I couldn’t have dreamed of. (it was giving time-turner teas tbh. still not over playing 3 sets at glasto and being on set at 6am the tuesday after 🤪) So…. i’m Rounding off this year NOT JUST by DJing on BBC Radio 6 Music @bbc6music for @sherelle_ ’s Loud and Proud takeover at 2am tonight (DJing off 3 CDJs 😘) BUT ALSO…. with a massive thank you. Till the room SHAKES divas. Always and forever.

Pour la première de la série, elle a convoqué les énergies : la bedroom productrice Malaise Vagal et son hyper-rap cynique parisien - et AZADI.mp3, qui distille la rage dans toute son amplitude expressive entre liberté et compression, hybridant les figures goth et saphiques dans son espace digital habité.
YAS MEEN SELECTRESS une DJ égyptienne, actrice culturelle et co-fondatrice du collectif cairote entièrement féminin Dhamma.
Entre Le Caire et New York où elle a vécu pendant dix ans, elle tisse une esthétique globale qui traverse drum and bass, baile funk, jersey club et sonorités expérimentales.
À travers sa pratique, Yas Meen crée des espaces où s’entrelacent récits culturels et culture club contemporaine, affirmant une vision inclusive et audacieuse du dancefloor.
Figure montante de la scène DJ londonienne et au-delà, AZADI.mp3 (iel) transforme ses découvertes et ses désillusions en sons sur les platines, comme un acte de survie.
Des breaks à la UKG, en passant par des sonorités glanées dans les recoins les plus obscurs d’internet, tout ce que joue AZADI.mp3 est imprégné de ses racines des régions MENA, fusionnées avec une énergie club.
MALAISE VAGAL est une artiste et DJ basée à Paris, résidente Radio Flouka et bedroom producer depuis plus de dix ans. En tant que productrice, elle s’intéresse à une multitude de styles en gardant une signature propre à son regard cynique sur les pratiques sociétales contemporaines et les dynamiques du monde. Sa pratique du DJing est le reflet de son époque, postmoderne et polymorphe.
