SAFE SPACES — my second novel has found its way home with @grantabooks 💞🧞‍♀️ Book 2 has a name now! I’ve spent the last four years writing this novel and if anything has been a labour of love, this novel has been for me. Both a portrait of a community and a personal reckoning for a young musician, it asks: can the dream of a safe space ever be realised? Thank you to my amazing agent @nicolabarrreads for believing in me and this book, and to Bella & the team at @grantabooks for welcoming me with so much warmth and joy. Every brick of this book came from those moments where you call on people and their answer tells a story. I travelled between Newark NJ and London to write it, and was given so much support along the way. Thank you to everyone who introduced me to this author life with KEEPING THE HOUSE, beautifully published by And Other Stories. It was a truly magical start and I feel now it’s a hope filled time to step out again with Book 2. How lovely that I spotted this press release because my brilliant cousin Peri sent it to me. Someone said to me you can truly understand what help is when somebody helps you. All of the people I love the most helped me with this book and it has already opened doors that make me feel like we can do more beautiful things together. Grateful for all the publications, reviewers, readers and booksellers who have selected Keeping The House for your 2021 fave lists, book spotlights and reviews — Guardian, Observer, White Review, Los Angeles Review of Books, New York Times, The Skinny, The Big Issue, The Scotsman, Between the Covers and others who are still waving hello on my Google alerts. Having critical engagement with the book has made me feel like my work is actually being taken seriously and on its own terms — it feels surreal to know that we made no compromises with this story and it is still being considered with such openness and care. One of my highlights has been visiting and chatting with the bookshops who launched, 2021 listed, championed and beautifully window displayed KTH in all its noughties blues like @portybooks , @foylesforbooks , @pagesofhackney @dauntbooks , @waterstones and @lrbbookshop . Thank you too, to the very talented team at @burleyfisher who chose KTH as your book of the year. It's important to share these things because a book like mine that comes out with an independent press, with such a risky subject matter - from someone who grew up like me - is an uphill battle. A lot of struggles but a passionate and determined team surrounded this project. I want you to know that you are the source of all abundance. It is right within you, if you look after yourself and your energy. You can carry that energy to set goals, take meetings with yourself, nurture your passion projects and then experience your dreams happening before you. As long as there's a you. What next with work? Book 2 is at the quarter mark now, the EP is nearly ready and some other special things are gently growing. I have a Wikipedia Page! I was hesitant to progress my career this year because sometimes taking a step forward can feel like letting go of the past. But a few days ago I thought how nice it would be to get my career to the point where I had a stacked Wikipedia page, collating what I've done, from solo projects (that are never really solo) to my work over the years with all of my beautiful collaborators. I DM'd the BYP group chat™️ asking if a friend could make me one. Then my friend messaged back like, "Tice, you've already got a Wikipedia page". I was like WHAT? Sometimes when you want something and say it out loud, it brings it into existence. I know it's not a big deal to a lot of people but it's a big deal to me. I used to sit in the computer lab at Lea Valley High School reading interesting wiki entries and thinking about what people did to get where they got. Now I'm thinking of a stub, how it can grow, take stock and archive. Thank you to WikiProject Women in Red (WiR) who had my page made for me. Their objective is to turn red links into blue ones, with their scope on women's biographies, women's works, and women's issues.* What a lovely surprise. 🥺🔮💜🧞‍♀️ *Thank you too to the people who have been updating it since, including a wikimedian in Scotland who has been updating as part of their Gothic Writers list... and not yet their accused witches list.. 👀

Last week at Libreria, Şeyda Kurt and Tice Cin offered a provocative reconsideration of hate not simply as a negative emotion, but as a force that can clarify what polite language often obscures. Kurt’s argument, in Hate: The Uses of a Powerful Emotion, is not that hate is virtuous, but that difficult emotions have political and creative uses. 31. My life has become quieter, in a sense that I feel more confident in my immediate surroundings and thoughts. I’m taking a lot from conversations timed to the last train, from listening to water against rocks that are smoothing. Friend said I have the vibe of a ghost fairy Pokémon which is nice because I would like to pop out at you while you are eating a meal deal by the two hundred year olds with their stone poems. I’m very interested in life. Here, there. Out and about. On a bench with a book. In the middle of the days.

My first set on NTS! A radio station that has helped me discover so many artists I dearly love. 1 hour of original poetry from me on resilience, survival and hope, spooned into a set with songs from some of my favourite producers. The proof copy of my second book SAFE SPACES has arrived through the post, which is such a joy. I’ve been writing this book since I put Keeping the House down, so that would be about 5 years! It’s so rewarding to feel the weight of the book and close the loop in my mind, knowing that this story that I wrote through so much sharpness has steadied through and become its own flutter of pages. Grateful to my publisher @grantabooks for making such beautiful proofs and my editor Bella for being there with me through all the small checks. A proof copy is a copy of the book printed for quality checks and also to share with early reviewers and writers for words of endorsement, that’s how blurbs are already on the final copies of the book at the point of publication. Which also means that right now, some of my earliest readers have started to read Safe Spaces and that’s really exciting and scary! I held this book so close and didn’t even share pages with friends during my writing outside of my lovely agent Nicola and sensitivity readers, so this is a real lighting moment for me. So meaningful to open in front of my mum today. I remember when this time came with my first novel, a queue of my little nephews and nieces formed as they posed for photos with it and now some of them are in secondary school. Funny how time flies. SAFE SPACES will be out in September 2026.

Plastic Language, vol. 20 1am, 18/02/2025, ch. 1 @nts_radio For this volume of the show, interdisciplinary artist, writer, DJ and poet Tice Cin (@ticecin / @ticecinisdjing ) came to the NTS Studio in the depths of winter darkness to perform this set: an hour-long conceptual mix of poetry, ephemera and music, including fragments from her sophomore novel 'SAFE SPACES' (@grantabooks ) and some unreleased tracks.  She also responded to some prompts specially for Plastic Language, circling ideas of renewal, light in darkness -- and Majora’s Mask (the greatest video game of all time!!). Enormous thanks to Tice for putting this together, it's a wild, visionary, euphoric sonic ride and really takes listeners into the world of Tice's writing, which I wholeheartedly recommend. KEEPING THE HOUSE MIXTAPE is out now. This is a full sonic adaptation of my novel, made by us and out now on Neoprene Genie. It tells a story of set in and around the North London heroin trade, of heroin hidden inside the buds of a growing cabbage and transported to the UK from Turkey. Drop by drop makes a lake. I recorded each track thinking of the best way to tell you the story with no hesitation. Reaching for what a book would tell differently. It’s Kitchen Sink Surrealism.
