Intended to feature biophilic design, the house’s distinctive form echoes the traditional Malabar style architecture. It is partly inspired by the ‘tharavadu’ (traditional houses) of Kerala, a repository of the Indian culture. Westerly breezes are directed over the facade, creating a calm, protected zone on its leeward-side. The house’s primary form is created by a series of mild-steel frames in a bold expression of structure. Text description by the architects The concept of rebirth is inspired from the quote of Captain Vikram Batra. Either I will come back after hoisting the Tricolor, or I will come back wrapped in it, but I will be back for sure. REBIRTH –  पुनर्जन्म (in Hindi) ‘Reborn to be an immortal’. The memorial is a gestation on the idea of rebirth of those unsung heroes through their stories, journey and struggles translated as spatial expressions. A culmination to the historical Rajpath extending through the India Gate, the National War Memorial is an open landscaped public space spread over 42 acres in the C -hexagon. Mostly invisible but strongly present, it is a semi-subterranean design remaining a peoples’ place but with a different dimension of emotional weight. Text description by the architects Site chosen by the clients as a venue for their and to create a small holiday home A linear approach was taken, where the existing pavilion became the main house which housed a small bedroom, Pantry, Bathroom, and Living Area and the extension created became the toilet block. This approach allowed us to create a clean rectangular form that would act as a backdrop to the site without eating into the clear lush open farm. Shah Consulting Engineers LLP, Arkk Consultants Client: Centre for Environment Planning and Technology (CEPT) __________________________________ Text description by the architects Embedded in the heart of the CEPT University campus designed by B. V. Doshi. Neutrally oriented at a central location with separate and equal entrances facing all cardinal directions, access to the building – and identification with it – is collective across the campus. Using the functional requirements of the library as an underlying contemporary theme, the building formally weaves itself into the pre-existing campus narrative. Through alignments in plan with adjacent buildings, modulation of sectional levels into and above the earth, and honest material selection and expression, the building respects the continuum of existing architectural expression that has defined the CEPT University campus for decades. At the most fundamental performative level, the CEPT library is a technologically adept repository of multi-format media, both responding to and anticipating the current and future acquisitions of the university. A Large requirement on such a small plot called for an introverted solution with a garden at the center, around which the rest of the spaces function. This garden was lifted up to accommodate parking, a room for the domestic help and a games room on the stilt floor. An extra room was added on the terrace for guests. The central double height court is covered with mild steel, with laser cut perforations; parametrically designed to create privacy. The perforations are smaller where the adjacent building has an opening looking into the court and larger, where the building has a blank wall. A cutout allows light all the way to the games room in the basement below.  The garden also houses a fountain which brings the tropical environment alive with its sound of water. Wherever one is in the house they’re always aware of the elemental nature of the garden. The master bedroom has an attached balcony which opens up inwards onto the garden below. The wardrobe features handmade cane work, a fast vanishing craft practice. The attached toilet is made transparent so the planters inside are visible, lit from the skylight above. The façade has operable louvers made out of perforated mild steel. This offers a certain amount of privacy from the close proximity neighborhood. They are opaque from the outside during daytime and when the light shines from within in the evening, they become transparent and shine like a yellow jewel. The flooring is a mixture of yellow & white cement oxide, handmade cement tiles, yellow tandoor and terracotta tiles. Project: Bhuwalkar house Place: Bangalore, Karnataka Architects: Khosla Associates Project Area: 10,200 sq. ft. Photographer: Shamanth Patil J. Text by the architects What drew us to the site in the upmarket Koramangala neighborhood in Bangalore was the number of mature trees that were part of the surrounding streetscape. The west-facing frontage of the plot has a beautiful tree straddling the compound wall and we were keen to establish a dialogue between the house and the tree. Our choice on the spatial flow of the house was dictated by the views to the street as well as to the open area and the low-slung house sitting on the adjacent plot to its north. The anchor of the house is a dramatic double height living area that culminates vertically in a sweeping butterfly shaped roof, orienting west and east towards street as well as garden. Walkways on the upper level lead to private bedrooms and interact with the double height volumes of the staircase shaft on one side and the living area on the other. Copious amounts of natural night bathe this area via a series of skylights while louvered operable blinds allow for controlled light and views via large expanses of glass on the east and west elevations. The house is richly layered and textured with a judicious mix of materials, which extends into the choice of furniture, furnishings and artwork.
