Home!
The Coconut Wood Roof: The defining feature of the home is its oversized, intricate diagonal-shaped coconut-wood roof. While coconut wood has historically been used in Kerala, it lost popularity over the decades to teak. Thought Parallels revived it here as a highly sustainable, cost-effective alternative, creating a visually dynamic ceiling that draws the eye upward from the interior.
Exteriors: Angular walls finished in exposed red brickwork with distinctive corner patterns (created by leaving gaps where the courses meet) and classic Mangalore clay roof tiles.
Interiors: Lime-plastered walls, stone-tiled floors, and extensive use of teak for window frames and doors.
Hidden Details: One of the most praised details of the house is how modern conveniences are hidden. The air-conditioning units are concealed behind beautifully carved wooden wall panels inspired by the historic 16th-century Padmanabhapuram Palace.

The primary design brief for Ananda House was to create a home that resonated deeply with Kerala’s traditional architecture while updating it for modern, minimalist living. we accomplished what they describe as an “unstoppably Indian, natural, local, crafty, artsy, sustainable, cerebral, minimal, contemporary response to vernacular.”Instead of mimicking old colonial or traditional styles verbatim, Thought Parallels broke down the fundamental syntax of Kerala’s tropical architecture—deep overhangs, natural ventilation, and earthy materials—and rebuilt it with a sharp, contemporary voice. The main material for the project has been coconut wood which is used for the roof structure which a material abundantly available in the region and since senile coconut trees are used for the same, the material becomes a very sustainable choice.

To address the lack of a clear vantage point, we shifted the visual focus upward. Consequently, the expansive overhanging roof serves as the primary design anchor, creating a riveting presence that is as functional as it is aesthetic!

Integration of the existing topography made it possible to structure the different spaces on each levels due to
the sloping nature of plot. Vehicular entry is to the lowest level. The pedestrian entry is on the higher
side of the plot.
All three floors are connected by a concrete spiral stair which delineates the plan in particular way. The living and dining areas with double height space on expansive glazed openings overlook dense landscape beyond..
