Not every home needs to do more. This one was designed to do less, and do it beautifully.
Perched above a Northland bay, the Gel Architects bach offers wrap-around decking, soaring rooflines and views across ocean and native bush. Recycled hardwood weatherboards, plywood ceilings and custom terrazzo. Simplicity pursued with precision.

Steel has a weight and authenticity that makes it feel at home in older buildings. Not as a contrast, but as a continuation.
At The Terrace House in Melbourne — a Victorian terrace reimagined by @flackstudio_ and delivered by @grwbuild — custom steel windows and doors by @steelwindowdesign do exactly that. Slender profiles. Expansive glazing. Fine proportions sitting comfortably against original plasterwork, mouldings and timber detailing.

On an exposed rise above the North Esk River, the wind is always part of the brief. Riverstone by Cumulus was designed around it.
The home folds to create a protected east-facing courtyard, a spotted gum screen spans the western façade controlling airflow and shade, and passive ventilation through the open plan eliminates the need for air-conditioning entirely. Calm, considered and rooted in its site.

What if a house felt less like something built and more like something uncovered?
Temple House by J. Kidman Architecture was conceived as a subtractive object rather than an additive one, as though a larger form had eroded back into itself over time. Multiple volumes weighted to the rear free the front yard and a central courtyard to face north, catching light all day. The result transcends newness in favour of something more enduring.

What does it mean for a material to last?
Last week we brought architects, designers and makers together at @fortetimber 's Auckland showroom to explore exactly that.
The conversation moved across timber, stone, patina and permanence and the idea that the best materials aren't the ones that resist change, but the ones that change well.
Moderated by architectural writer and publisher Debra Millar, with David Ponting of @ponting_fitzgerald_architects , Buster Caldwell of @wonder.group_ , Annabelle Smart of @studio_11_11 and Gareth Curd of @bespoketimberdesign

Over four decades, John Durkin has designed hundreds of homes across New Zealand. Very few of them have ever come back to the market.
It's not something he set out to achieve. But it has become, quietly, one of the most telling measures of what @abriarchitects does.
"What that means for me is that we have made something that has really become a part of our clients, something that they truly relate to."

Most homes look outward. Corner House looks in.
Designed by Archier for two retiring architects in Flinders, the home centres on a private courtyard planted by Openwork with trees that shift colour with the seasons. Living areas occupy each corner, connected by stepped gallery walkways.
