This portrait of Marilyn was taken in Lebanon, 1960, whilst Marylin was living and documenting the country’s vibrant communities, the environment and ever shifting political dynamics, forming a year long photo-essay. It feels poignant to share this portrait of Marilyn working during a time of peace in Lebanon. Marilyn Stafford’s legacy was rooted in curiosity, empathy and a commitment to documenting the world with honesty and care. Documentary photography has always had the ability to hold space for stories that might otherwise go unseen. The award honours the legacy of pioneering photographer Marilyn Stafford (1925 - 2023), whose practice spanned portraiture, fashion and reportage, and was grounded in a deep engagement with people and place. Facilitated by FotoDocument and supported by Nikon, the Marilyn Stafford FotoReportage award invites submissions from photographers engaging with social, environmental, economic, or cultural issues, with an emphasis on projects that highlight positive impact and change. The award seeks to carry this forward by supporting photographers who approach their work with the same depth and intention. Open to all women photographers at all stages of their careers and submissions are invited from across the globe. Applications are now open - Apply via the link in our bio @nikoneurope @marilynstaffordphotography @post.creatives @the_real_albuman_gallery @internationalwomensday_global @donna.decesare.photo @neontsoma @andreabruce @nina_emett @isabella.franceschini @respectmusicuk @ella_jpeg @simoncroberts @eleanor_emptage @studionicolajeffs @natalya.saprunova #marilynstaffordfotoreportageaward #internationalwomensday #womeninphotography #womenphotojournalists

People visit the Pamlico County Public Library to watch the solar eclipse in North Carolina on April 8, 2024. Following a decade of reporting in Iraq and Afghanistan, CatchLight Senior Fellow @andreabruce turned her lens to her home in Pamlico County, North Carolina, to reinvigorate local civic engagement and connection. In 2021, she launched Down in the County, a visual journalism publication that highlights the everyday experiences of rural communities. Today, the newsletter reaches an audience of nearly 5,000 readers, most of whom are among the county’s roughly 12,000 residents, who have no other sources of reliable local journalism. #NightofPhotojournalism Panel Highlight presented by CatchLight ✨ Heart of the Storm: Reconnecting North Carolina Residents Following a decade of reporting in Iraq and Afghanistan, Andrea Bruce has turned her lens to her home in Pamlico County, North Carolina, to reinvigorate local civic engagement and connection by launching a visual journalism publication that highlights the everyday experiences of rural communities. Hear insights from Bruce about the importance of community narratives in shaping democratic discourse in one of the US’s most embattled battleground states — three years after she launched her publication, a month after a devastating hurricane hit the state, and just days after a contentious presidential election. 📆 From November 9th, 6:00 PM, through November 10th, 2:00 AM. 📍 Amphithéâtre Saint Côme, 5 rue de l’école de Médecine, 75006 Paris The Night of Photojournalism is presented by @prixcarmignac , CatchLight, and @Dysturb , in partnership with @photowings , as part of the @photosaintgermain festival.

One of the toughest stories—teaching me, again, the importance of understanding the space between right and wrong. Please read this complicated NYT story of children, choices and when choice is not there. By a woman who is all heart, @sarah_hurtes Thank you, Kristin, Sigur, and Eirikur and everyone involved for trusting me with your life story. And NYT editor Mona Boshnaq for trusting me with photos. Link to story in bio.

Award-winning photographer @andreabruce spent more than a decade living and working abroad, visually reporting from regions including Iraq and Afghanistan. But in 2016 she embarked on a cross-country project to better understand the rising political tensions at home in the United States. It was years-long journey that eventually led her back to her hometown in rural Pamlico County, North Carolina, where she launched the visual newsletter @downinthecounty . In time, Bruce wants the publication to be a source of connection for the entire county — a chance for residents to share their stories, learn more about their neighbors, enjoy local events, access useful information and resources, and even be a part of the storytelling process. As CatchLight Local’s first Senior Fellow, Bruce is modeling and testing new ways to sustainably operate a hyperlocal publication that draws in readers through high-quality visual journalism.
