After several months of being sofa and wheelchair bound, I’m really thankful to have been given this commission by @bjp1854 and @bodleianlibraries to make portraits of leading academics and researchers @oxford_uni . The final images will form part of the permanent @bodleianlibraries art collection ✨it feels like the perfect re-entry to getting out my camera and making work again ❤️ Congratulations also to @leiamiamorrison @__studioaugusto who are the other two photographers to receive the commission 🙌🏻

If you’re heading to @photolondonfair this week, do pop by booth D3 @hackelburyfineart and say hi 👋🏻 they will be showing a selection of work from ‘Gli Isolani (The Islanders)’ ✨ along with some wonderful photography by other artists repped by the gallery. I’ll be giving a talk on portraiture with the brilliant @sabinajaskotgill at 5pm tomorrow, Wednesday May 13th - tickets £10 via the Photo London website (although you need to have a day pass to attend). The new Screening Room at the fair will also be showing the short film ‘Vera’ (10 mins). This was first shown at @rencontresarles in 2019 and funded with a small grant from @sony @worldphotoorg . Six years on and an immense amount of work later, it became a 90 min doc feature film ‘Mother Vera’ co-directed with Cécile Embleton. Hope to see some of you there! 😍

Join us this Saturday 18th after the large format photography workshop conduced by @alystomlinson (more info in dm) there will be the screening of @motherverafilm at @museonitsch . Starting at 19.00 (free entry). Language: Russian with Italian subtitles. Don’t miss✨ Mother Vera (2024), 91 minutes, black and white, directed by Alys Tomlinson and Cécile Embleton. In the striking silence of an Orthodox monastery in Belarus, a nun walks quickly toward the place of prayer. Hidden in the folds of her black habit, she kneels and lets out a deep breath, opening the story of an unexpected path where coming to terms with a dark past turns into a search for her own identity. Cécile Embleton and Alys Tomlinson follow her with a quiet, attentive gaze, observing her daily life and slowly revealing the more intimate and hidden parts of her story. Shot in refined black and white, with a precise and balanced form, Mother Vera traces a unique and unexpected female portrait, touching on universal themes of redemption and the search for freedom.

British photographer and filmmaker #AlysTomlinson joins us for a thoughtful conversation about her powerful project documenting Mother Vera. In this interview, Tomlinson reflects on the experience of #photographing life inside an Orthodox convent and the quiet intensity of working with a subject whose life is devoted to faith, solitude, and spiritual discipline. #mothervera Through her lens, Tomlinson explores themes of devotion, identity, and the human search for meaning. The project focuses on Mother Vera, a Russian Orthodox nun living in Belarus, whose story offers a rare and intimate look at monastic life in the modern world. Tomlinson discusses how the relationship developed, the sensitivity required to photograph within a religious space, and what she learned from spending time with someone whose life is defined by contemplation and belief.

IN THE COLLECTION: 🔍 A deep dive into our onsite photobook collection, where we extract and discuss select publications weekly. All featured titles are available to view in our collection. 💌 If you have a publication you’d like us to explore, get in touch at [email protected] _ Gli Isolani (The Islanders) Alys Tomlinson @alystomlinson In Gli Isolani (The Islanders), Alys Tomlinson explores ritual, tradition and identity across the Italian islands of the Venetian lagoon, Sicily and Sardinia. Photographed over two years using a large-format analogue camera, the work documents local communities during festivals and celebrations where elaborate costumes and masks — rooted in pagan myth, folklore and religious ritual — are still worn today. Set among crumbling stone, rugged landscapes and rural fields, the black-and-white images carry a timeless quality, blurring past and present. Figures appear both ordinary and mythical — suspended somewhere between fiction and reality, the sacred and the profane. Rather than documenting spectacle alone, Tomlinson’s photographs reflect on belonging and collective memory, revealing how tradition continues to shape identity and community in an increasingly changing world. Published by GOST Books @gost_books , Gli Isolani is a quiet yet haunting meditation on place, ritual and the enduring relationship between people and landscape. _ 🔗 All of our publications are digitised on our online Archive — visit photobookcafe.co.uk to find out more. 📚 Titles featured here are available to browse in our onsite collection. 🖐 We also accept donations of photobooks relevant to our catalogue.
