This Sunday May 3rd! You’re invited to a day of community care (and music)! Honored to get to share some music at @farmschool_nyc Food Futures Summit event! Arrive early for beautiful FREE food, plant and herbalism workshops, a panel with elders in the food justice movement, vendors, and of course, MUSIC! The incredible @sunnaay will be DJing and we will close out the day with a very special performance at 5pm <3 We will also be vending the Somos Medicina coloring book! 100% of merch proceeds from this event will go towards queer land stewards @plantula.sol , @cryscn and @atiemposemilla land project in Borikén! I graduated from Farm School NYC in 2023 after a year-long program learning about farming and food justice from the most caring and dedicated land stewards and educators. Entry for this event is sliding scale / pay-what-you-can and all proceeds will go toward Farm School’s programming, providing accessible farming and food justice training to the next generation of folks building the food justice futures we deserve. What does curiosity feel like in your body? Curiosidad is a song about that sweet electric curiosity that lights up in us when we long to know someone. To witness them up close, and get to know who they are when they allow themselves to exhale. Much love to @adrivergaramerino who helped me bring this duet to life: while the first two verses are two people singing to each other, in the third verse the voices come together and we both sing to ourselves: because intimacy requires us to let our guard down and allow ourselves to be seen, because to love someone is also to witness the strength of your own love and all that it makes possible. Endless gratitude to @mx.matias , who helped me take this song from a voice-note that poured out of me one day into a sweet bolerito, you can hear them on bass and percussion! And thank you to @kneecohanton who found the perfect chords and melodies to color in each part of the song with their piano, and gave us the most beautiful piano solo that sounds like the butterflies you feel when you feel that curiosidad. TRACK 2: Somos Medicina, the title track of this album, is a different kind of love song. It is a song that bursts with joy and tenderness, because we need more songs specifically about love for our community. That generous space that comes from working together, growing something life-affirming, feeling seen and celebrated for the unique medicine each of us brings. The arrangement for this song emerged in that space of collaboration. One day in the studio @manifiesto_music began playing these beautiful and nostalgic chords. Without missing a beat, @androgenesiss jumped in with a beat that alternated between softness and ecstatic crashes of joy. The lyrics of the song speak to different kinds of intimacy and cooperation we see in the natural world: a bee in a lavender bush that both pollinates the plant and also generates food for its community. The mycelium that connects a forest’s root system, allowing trees to communicate and share resources in a way that reminds us we are always more resilient when we move collectively. TRACK 1: Con Dulzura starts with a bath of breath and melody 🌊 A sonic apapacho from @hooploopsoup . Because that is what this song aims to be: a shower of sweetness to help wash away the things we need to release. My voice comes in with a series of affirmations and reminders I often need to hear: “Yo me hablo suavecito para poder escuchar” It is an affirmation and also a challenge: can I speak to myself with kindness? let my self criticisms go so that I can listen to the world around me? Then @manifiesto_music comes in with his vibrant guitar lines, a thumping bass, and a cumbia rhythm played on traditional afro-colombian instruments such as the llamador, tambor alegre, and guacharaca. I wanted this song to make you want to melt and also want to get up and dance, because what a better way to practice self-love than to dance some Cumbia in your room. My favorite part of the song are Lee and Sebas’ flute and guitar solos: moments that to me embody all of the joy that becomes possible when we are able to be sweet to ourselves. The song ends with a meditation on the things that we might hear when we are able to quiet the voices in our heads. We might hear: a song in the compost A whisper at the altar The sound of a seed Breaking open Towards life. Much love to everyone who made our first show of the year so special! From the kids dancing in the front to the elders nodding their heads- I looked out at the audience that night and saw so many loved ones. Organizers, teachers, land stewards, herbalists, artists and culture workers. So many people who inspire me, who I know are feeling the weight of all of the violence we are living through, and who are also keeping your flame of hope alive to offer your gifts.
