In the sound room Timmy Regisford is celebrating 35 Years of @theshelterny .The longest running dance party in NYC! In the atrium @jenifamayanja & @miaphillips535 will keeping the energy on high. Real Bronx shit. Still on a high getting to opening up for @esgtheband . I had THE best time last week playing all my favorite breaks. The crew and I played two records each in rotation for the 2.5hr opening set. One of my favorite ways to play because it leaves room for sponatenity. Not knowing what each other is going to play next and having to base your next choice on their last record. After over 10 years of playing together we still surprise each other. We had the crowd GOING right before the band went on. Thank you again @elsewherespace for the invite. ❤️

This Friday the 13th is a very special one. I have the pleasure of opening up for ESG again but this time with my crew @uptownvinylsupreme . ESG ( @esgtheband ) is an iconic punk-funk band formed by four sisters from the South BX in 1978, a year after the infamous NYC blackout. The sisters were encouraged by their mother to start playing musical instruments to keep them out of trouble. They taught themselves how to play and in doing so began creating their own unique sound fusing break and bass lines from artists like James Brown, inspiration from the latin grooves coming out of their neighborhood and a need to make people dance. Their first EP hit the scene and their track UFO became the most sampled song in history! Hip-Hop artists were among the biggest samplers with artists like Big Daddy Kane, Wu Tang Clan, Kool Moe Dee, Gang Starr, Junior Mafia, Beastie Boys, Easy Mo Bee, MF Doom, J Dilla, and plenty more. Unfortunately royalties, sampling laws, and licensing practices weren’t at the forefront in those days and they rarely saw any $$$ for the use of their beats. The group addressed this issue on their 1992 12” EP, “Sample Credits Don’t Pay our Bills”. They have kept their music alive with international tours, new EP’s, re-issues and two of the members daughters joining the band. As a woman from the Bronx I hold their story near and dear to me and am honored to be able to open up for their Final Dance Tour stop in Brooklyn.
