I have just got back from the world premiere of a film I have helped nurture and steer for 8 years. The film is CONSCIOUS by Suki Chan and it was premiered at the excellent documentary film festival CPH: DOX in Copenhagen. I first met Suki in 2009, and she was one of the first artists we showed at Tintype. CONSCIOUS began life as two short films Hallucinations and Fog In My Head. It is a film that looks at consciousness and dementia from an unusual angle, questioning whether the alteration of self that happens with neurodegenerative disease, is always necessarily negative. As Wendy Mitchell describes in the film “I quite like this gregarious alien that I’ve become.” The screening on Saturday night at CPH: DOX was packed; the response fulsome and positive, and Suki did a compelling Q&A alongside neuroscientist Anil Seth, who is in the film - as is his mother Ann. For me, it was so enjoyable to sit back and watch a film - that I’ve seen many many cuts of - finished, graded, on a big screen, with a good sound system (the music, by Dominik Scherrer is a powerful element), and with an audience. CONSCIOUS is finished but its journey out into the world has only just begun. Massive congratulations to all who worked on the film but particularly producer Aimara Reques, who has done a sterling job on steering the film through the choppy seas of production - in her inimitable vivacious, positive way. And of course, most of all to Suki. I have worked with many artists but never with someone so meticulous and with such a fine grasp of detail.
