Award-winning author Bethany Barton’s latest visit with us at Farmdale Elementary. Students had a hilariously fun time learning all about how our digestive systems work with her latest non-fiction children’s book “I’m Trying to Love Farts,” receiving autographed copies, and seeing her original, self-made (and perfectly safe!) toilet paper blaster in action. Thank you, Ms. Barton, for a day full of laughs AND information! 🤣 Join our team to volunteer: /volunteer.html Text to Give! Our visit this year to Yallwest, where we took 365 students from across Los Angeles public schools to participate in the weekend’s local book festivities. Students received complimentary totes and lunch funds before exploring the event, then happily dispersed to watch keynote addresses, meet authors of books sitting on their libraries’ shelves, and peruse book-themed vendors lining Santa Monica High’s campus. These young book lovers were overjoyed to attend (many for the first time!) and were even more delighted to receive a free bundle of high-interest books from us at the end of their trip. THANK YOU to the Rise Up Foundation and our other donors who, with all their support, made this quality trip a reality for hundreds of scholars who have not had equitable access to literacy and learning. 🙏 Join our team to volunteer: /volunteer.html Text to Give! I’m super excited to announce that I’m part of a team with @accessbooksca helping acclaimed director Tony Nguyen and his amazing documentary “YEAR OF THE CAT” have his Long Beach debut screening in two weeks! The film is about Tony’s lifelong search to find his biological father, but it’s also about the long cost of war, fatherhood, hope, and most of all, redemption. It will be screening on Wednesday, May 20 at the Art Theatre on 4th street. Tony will be there and I will moderate the post screening Q&A. (Special guests slated to attend as well). Link for tickets in bio.

Author and illustrator Evan Turk’s first Access Book author at Emmerton Elementary, and also Emmerton Elementary’s first author visit sponsored by us! Emmerton Eagles enjoyed a presentation on the marvels and different mediums of narration by the creator of “The Storyteller” himself—and, as per the custom of our author visits, took home autographed copies of the title for their home book collections. Thank you for inspiring and further fueling these young scholars’ love of stories, Mr. Turk 📚✨ Join our team to volunteer: /volunteer.html Text to Give! This past weekend, Access Books students from Compton, South Los Angeles, the Valley and East Los Angeles attended the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books. For most, it was their first time at a book festival. They met authors, explored rows of books, and spent the day surrounded by stories and people who love reading. Each student went home with a packet of new books. Thank you to the sponsors who made this experience — and these books — possible for our students. One student said it best: “I never knew there were so many people in the world that like books as much as I do.” That’s what access creates. Not just books on shelves, but moments where students see themselves as part of something bigger — a community of readers, thinkers, and storytellers. At Access Books, we believe equity begins with books. And when students have access, joy and imagination follow. @latimesfob @comptonunified @laschools @latimesfob @comptonunified @laschools #accessbooks #latimesfob #equitybeginswithbooks #literacy #bookfestivals
