For HOW TO LIVE TOGETHER’s poster, I wanted something that would capture the film’s ridiculous, maximalist, chaotic & claustrophobic energy, and illustrator Manfredi Ciminale @manfrediciminale totally knocked it out of the park! Overwhelming in all the right ways, bursting with clutter, overlapping hands, and sly little sight gags, it truly feels like the spirit of the film exploded onto the page. While the film itself is in high contrast black and white, we opted to go with a limited but colorful palette for the poster art. I think it conveys something of the intensity of the film’s aesthetic without directly replicating it. Including some detail views here so you can see just how intricate (and downright funny) Manfredi’s work is. HOW TO LIVE TOGETHER premieres at @viffest October 9th at 6pm, with a second screening October 10th at 3pm. It’ll also be playing the following week at @nhff (screening date + time coming soon).

Honored and delighted to receive Entrevues Belfort’s “One+One Award” — granted to How to Live Together for its “remarkable, innovative, and liberated sound design.” I share this award with Andrew Siedenburg (@andrewsiedenburg ) and Christopher Woll (@downmixpost ), who are responsible for the film’s sound design and mix. As I shared in my acceptance speech: I knew from the start that sound would be a crucial component of this film, and that I wanted its soundscape to be dense, complex, musical, and experimental. When I first began working with Andrew, I handed him a 15 page long document of sound notes—some very specific and some very abstract and poetic. It was a ludicrously ambitious plan (especially for a short!), that required an enormous amount of hard work to execute. I’m grateful that Andrew and Chris were completely on board with this unconventional vision, and each brought their own voices and creativity to the process. The finished soundtrack is the result of 1000s of decisions made by each of them, which might not be noticed individually, but whose cumulative effect is viscerally felt. I’m happy to be able to celebrate their essential contributions to this film. I also have to thank our on set sound mixer Max Harper (@eddiefresnel ), boom operator Irene Gil Ramon (@irenegilramon ), additional sound mixer Dawn Givens (@dawnmgivens ), foley artist Tara Blume (@boomfoley ), and foley mixer Ryan Maguire (@magu_sound ) — without whom there would be no sound to work with! And finally, thank you to Entrevues, for putting on a fantastic festival. It was a real honor to play alongside so many outstanding films. I had a blast! I am beyond honored to announce that "How to Live Together" has been selected as one of the 10 short & medium length films playing in @festival_entrevues_belfort 's International Competition this year. This selection is especially exciting to me, as many filmmakers who have had a profound influence on my own work—Yorgos Lanthimos, Leos Carax, Josh & Benny Safdie, Gabriel Abrantes, Athina Rachel Tsangari, Kleber Mendonça Filho, Joel Potrykus, and of course my friend and old classmate @djkylekyle —screened their early films at Entrevues. I can't wait to attend. See you in France!
