Join us for our new edition of Film Studies, examining the evolution of lighting in cinema. In this rendition of Film Studies, cinematographer Devan Scott takes us on a journey through the history of lighting in cinema, tracing its development from the sunlit studios of early silent film through the three-point setups that defined classical Hollywood realism and film noir to modern techniques of motivated lighting. Featuring screenings of THE DOLL, THE GRAPES OF WRATH, THE MUSIC ROOM, and BLACK BAG. Case study talks begin at 11AM, screenings will start by 12PM. Get your tickets at the link in bio.

Starring Tony Leung Chiu-Wai (IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE) and Léa Seydoux (BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOUR, SPECTRE), SILENT FRIEND is a singular meditation on how we connect to the natural world, and to each other. On the grounds of a medieval German university town looms an imposing Ginkgo biloba, a tree whose longevity stands in marked contrast to three intimate, human-scaled stories. In 1908, the university’s first female student (Luna Wedler) gains admission into the prestigious botany department, confronting the sexism of both professors and peers. In 1972, amidst counterculture movements, a reserved student (Enzo Brumm) finds his attention captured by a fellow housemate and the geranium plant she studies. In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, a neuroscientist from Hong Kong (Tony Leung Chiu-Wai) secures the help of a renowned botanist (Léa Seydoux) for an experiment on the old ginkgo tree. Featured at #VIFF2025, SILENT FRIEND returns to VIFF screens from May 22-29. Tickets at viff.org.

Using found Super 8 footage, local filmmaker Jennifer Chiu explores the history of the Hakka culture in CLAN OF THE PAINTED LADY. In this engrossing documentary, presented here for Asian Heritage Month, director Jennifer Chiu reaches into her family’s history to explore the Hakka — a people, a language, and a culture. Thought to hail from the north of China, the Hakka settled in the south of the country, where they were known as the “guest people”. In the face of social marginalization, many of them dispersed to places such as Mauritius, India, Jamaica, and Canada — including BC’s Lower Mainland, where Chiu spent much of her childhood. If you missed it at #VIFF2025, see CLAN OF THE PAINTED LADY with a special Q&A from the director herself on Saturday, May 23 at 2:00PM. Tickets at viff.org. Co-presented with the Chinese Canadian Museum.

One boy. Three nuns. One epic road trip. HOLY DAYS certainly channels the spirit of Derry Girls' Sister Michael. After his mom passes, Brian (Elijah Tamati) is comforted by Sisters Agnes, Luke and Mary Clare (Judy Davis, Miriam Margolyes and Jacki Weaver, respectively). The quirky quartet hit the road, Blues Brothers style, to save their convent from being sold to a property developer. See it on screen at the VIFF Centre from May 13-21 with a special Q&A from filmmaker Nat Boltt on May 15 and 21 screenings. Tickets at viff.org.
