Deafness Awareness Week - My life growing up was like playing telephone missing the whole message before I even heard it, then having to fill in the gaps on my own. I carried so much shame from being called lazy, distracted, or “not listening,” and for years it chipped away at my self-esteem. I can’t believed how hard I fought others to see and hear me fighting myself, blaming myself for being different . I felt like i was a problem . I was never lazy, I was trying to survive in a world that couldn’t hear me clearly yet. Theatre taught me to build myself up. Help me realize “life can be beautiful”(@heathersmusical )theatre as many of you know is one of my safe spaces most theatres are welcoming and will do what they can do accommodate. Everyone deserves to experience art, stories, and connection. Not every deaf or HOH person’s journey looks the same, but so many of us know what it feels like to grow up misunderstood and not being heard. Accessibility is not a favor or something to make your life harder it’s an understanding that allows people to fully exist, connect, and be understood and included. #deafawarenessweek2026 #unilateralhearingloss #accessibilityforall #accessmatters #beingheard

Five years ago, a dream found its home. 🏠✨ We're feeling incredibly emotional looking back at the moment our vision became a reality at the BFI. In April 2021, with the support of the BFI, we launched UK Muslim Film online as a new charity dedicated to changing the script for Muslim representation in front of and behind camera. To the @britishfilminstitute thank you for sharing your platform and hosting our official debut. You gave us a crucial stage at a pivotal moment, amplifying our vision and helping us reach the audiences and industry voices that mattered most. Our founder, Sajid Varda, established this volunteer led charity after years of navigating the industry, knowing that for the narrative to change, the support systems for filmmakers had to change too. We launched with a clear promise: to nurture emerging talent and act as a vital bridge for authenticity in the screen industry. As Melanie Hoyes (BFI's Senior Director of Inclusion) so powerfully put it: "Unfortunately the landscape around Islamophobia hasn't changed much since their inception in 2021 and UKMF's mission is needed now more than ever. It's such a joy to support an organisation that is so strongly rooted in passion, authenticity and community that is truly driving change." Five years later, we are still so proud to be a year-round hub, ensuring that Muslim representation is never just a "background extra" but a leading voice. 🌟 We want you to be part of our next chapter! Sign up to UK Muslim Film now. It's free to become a member. Link in bio.
