'I combine my love of paper and stitching to express my fascination with forests and the difficult subjects of illness and grief. I machine quilt into paper, then add hand embroidery, beading and sculptural elements to create artworks that explore the often-unseen world around us. I spend as much time as my body and chronic illness will allow in the woods around my Brown County home, photographing the forest, especially the mushrooms, mosses and lichens, native plants and insects that make themselves known to us when we take the time to stop and look. These walks and photos are the basis of the artwork I create, whether I am hand embroidering directly into the photographs or using them to create patterns, designs, or ideas for stitched paper artwork.' - Michele Pollock

To Know This Place traces Michele's long relationship with the woods near her home in Brown County. After chronic illness limited her ability to go into the landscape, she began bringing the woods into her studio instead. This work is documentation, tribute, and touchstone: a cabinet of curiosities, a reimagined way of belonging, and a love song to the forest. 🌳

✨ OPEN CALL ✨
As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, A More Perfect Union invites artists to reflect on what America has been, what it is, and what it might yet become. Rather than seeking a single narrative, this exhibition aims to embrace complexity, holding space for pride and progress alongside tension and contradiction.

In the context of the America250 commemoration, this exhibition centers on voices from the Columbus area. We welcome work grounded in personal experience, local history, inherited stories, and imagined futures. Artists are encouraged to explore themes of patriotism, democracy, labor, identity, belonging, freedom, history, and community.

Selected works will come together to form a collective portrait of our community, connecting past and future. This is an invitation to contribute to a broader conversation about where we are now and what comes next.

The artworks are sold for $50 each, benefiting future programming at 411 Gallery.
Through 50/50, CAAC seeks to lower barriers to accessing art. Additionally, by keeping the price point low, a broad audience can purchase these original artworks. With a diverse group of local talent, 50/50 continues to generate excitement each year.

Join us for a special reception with curators Rick Valicenti and Suzie Shin on August 16 at 3:45 pm, immediately following the Exhibit Columbus Curatorial Conversation.
“Alexander Girard, Reverberations — Forever” celebrates the timeless influence of Alexander Girard, whose work is woven tightly throughout the town of Columbus, Indiana. As a close friend of the visionary Millers, J. Irwin and Xenia, Girard displayed a masterful touch across the iconic Miller House with his ability to blend art, architecture, and whimsy into everyday life. Impossibly, the colors, forms, and patterns hold a freshness that continues to inspire generations of artists and designers globally.
Curated by Rick Valicenti and Suzie Shin, friends of the Columbus design community for over a decade, “Alexander Girard, Reverberations — Forever” brings together a diverse group of artists and designers whose works reflect Girard’s spirit. In a unique gesture of community involvement, Columbus and Chicago residents were invited to lend original works by Girard from their collections, allowing direct connections between now and the Midwest’s artistic heritage.
The exhibition displays conscious or unconscious reverberations of Girard’s work as it continues to spark optimism in the broader landscape of art and design. Girard’s legacy echoes for generations to come.
>> “Alexander Girard, Reverberations — Forever” is supported through the generosity of The Miller Family and Deer Crossing Fund.
