This support group started last May and offers #LGBTQ newcomers and refugees a safe space to not only learn about Saskatoon and Canada, but as you will hear in this episode, the group is providing community and friendship to those who attend.
You will hear a variety of voices in the episode including group participants and the facilitator, Iris Akbar. There are some really honest and heartfelt moments in this episode, and I am grateful to the Newcomer Support Group for the privilege of telling its story.

A special bonus episode of YXE Underground is out now wherever you find your favourite #podcasts.
It features Anita Smith, Executive and Artistic Director of @25thstreettheatrecentre , discussing an exciting and truly unique theatre project called Behind Closed Doors.
It takes people to six different sites across Saskatoon to explore unseen conversations and gives them a chance to experience in a performance in a unique venue specific to the story. Each play is 20 minutes, has limited capacity (we’re talking 6-8 people per venue), and will no doubt make the impression on audience members.
I am a huge fan of Anita as an artist and a person, and any opportunity to talk with her on the podcast is one that I will take. She graciously took time in-between her many duties to speak with me on the @usask campus to tell listeners about Behind Closed Doors and why people will never forget watching a play in a bathroom or baseball announcer booth!
Here are the six plays and their locations in Saskatoon, and you can purchase tickets on the 25th Street Theatre website.

The Hopeful Hearts Home program, created and operated by the @ywca_saskatoon , offers women and children who have experienced interpersonal violence a safe and supportive place to call home.
In this month’s episode, listeners are taken inside the home to not only meet residents and staff, but to experience the unique spaces designed specifically for Hopeful Hearts. These spaces include a communal kitchen where families can cook a meal together while getting to know each-other, and a family room where women and children can play and be themselves.
Hopeful Hearts Home is making a difference in #Saskatoon, and you can find out how by listening to the episode wherever you find your #podcasts including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or the YXE Underground website.

Congratulations to #Saskatoon filmmaker, Amalie Atkins, on her incredible documentary film, @agathasalmanac .
A group of us from Sherbrooke went to a screening of the film last night at the @roxysaskatoon that featured a Q&A with Amalie and YXE Underground alumni, @mnqblom .
The theatre was packed and the film was absolutely wonderful! Amalie’s aunt Agatha reminded me so much of both my grandmothers who lived in rural Saskatchewan and loved gardening.
I hope you get a chance to see this documentary. It’s screening Sunday to Thursday at the Roxy Theatre, and I think you’ll love it!
So great to see you last night, Monique, and so nice to meet you, Amalie!

The YXE Underground Season 8 poster is now available for you to enjoy!
The poster was designed by podcast alumni and local artist, @rowendinsmore , and I absolutely love it!
I had reached out to Rowen after seeing some of her recent abstract paintings to see if she could do something along those lines for the podcast. She graciously said yes and I’m thrilled with what she created!
The poster comes in two sizes (11x14 and 18x24) and would look fantastic on your wall or perhaps the window of your business! They’re free and I would love to hook you up with one. Please let me know if you would like a poster and I’ll make it happen.
If you want to learn more about Rowen’s artistic work in our community, please listen to a Season Seven episode focusing on a @the525art exhibition and follow her on Instagram.
Thank you for being so wonderful to work with, Rowen, and for creating such a unique poster!
A special bonus episode of YXE Underground dropped today featuring @craigsilliphant and @donsparrow !
Craig had made a documentary called ‘How Chee’ which tells the story of an infamous television advertisement in Saskatoon that aired constantly from 1996 to 1998 promoting the Great Buffet of China restaurant.
How this advertisement came to be, the impact it had on those involved in its production, and why it became a viral hit in China, are all touched on in the documentary.
‘How Chee’ debuts at the @bwaytheatre on Thursday, April 2nd, at 7pm, but Craig was kind enough of take time out of his busy schedule to join me at the @yardandflagon to give listeners a preview of the documentary and why he wanted to tell this story.
Saskatoon artist Don Sparrow, who designed the documentary’s poster, joined us to share his memories of the advertisement and why it is such a memorable piece of nostalgia for so many people in Saskatoon.
I am lucky to call Craig and Don my friends. They are both gifted storytellers and two of the most creative people I know. They also recognize how lucky we are in Saskatoon to have such a passionate community of creative people who support each-other in their artistic endeavours. It was a blast speaking with them and learning about this truly unique slice of Saskatoon pop culture.
You can visit the Broadway Theatre website to get your tickets for Thursday night’s screening, which includes a special Q&A after the film featuring Craig and several of the characters in the film.
Thank you for listening and hope to see you Thursday night. Congrats on the film, Craig!
