Talamh opens this Thursday in Miami @momentum_fine_art 💫 Talamh, the Irish word for land, brings together long-form photographic projects that look at how landscape in Ireland carries memory, history and human presence. I’m delighted to be showing images from The Thousand Year Old Boy, which traces a quiet thread between myth and landscape, imagining how a child might carry the deep memory of the land itself across centuries. Great news for Yvette Monahan, whose series ‘The Ocean Within’, originally commissioned by Belfast Photo Festival, has been selected as one of four winning projects of Project Groundswell.
‘The Ocean Within’ explores the hidden role of fish as biological timekeepers and storytellers. Otoliths and salmon scales act as living archives of the ocean, recording journeys, environments and shared memory over time.
Project Groundswell is a major visual arts initiative, led by Photo Museum Ireland that harnesses the power of photography to illuminate climate action. Yvette’s work reflects on the fragile ecosystems of our seas and asks what it would mean if this living archive were lost.
We are delighted to see the project recognised, published as a Monograph and an on display in Dublin until the 12th April.

It’s been a difficult week in the world. It makes you hold things a little more quietly. Tomorrow evening I’m opening The Ocean Within @photomuseumirl photographs exploring the quiet archives of the sea.
You’re very welcome to join us from 6.30pm. The evening includes a public discussion on Photography & Climate Action beforehand, with international speakers: Shirley Clerkin, Environmental Advisor to Project Groundswell; Veronica Nicolardi, Director, @cortonaonthemove ; Nadine Weixler, Curator, @fotohof ; and Rui Prata, Curator, @imagolisboa
These are otoliths or ear stones from a Whiting.
Layer by layer, they record time, migration and environmental change. Scientists read them like tree rings, tracing where a fish has travelled and how it has lived.
In The Ocean Within, otoliths were explored as living archives, memory written in calcium and salt.
Opening this Thursday, March 5th, 6.30-8pm @photomuseumirl Ireland as part of Project Groundswell alongside a newly released limited-edition photobook. All welcome!

Monahan’s The Ocean Within reveals fish as biological timekeepers – living archives carrying memory across generations.
Drawing on the work of marine scientists in Ireland, Monahan's project explores otoliths, scales and the sensory world of aquatic life. It is a timely project as our government is currently debating the establishment of Marine Protected Areas in our seas.
Presented as a major installation at Photo Museum Ireland – alongside a newly released limited-edition photobook.

Last week The Ocean Within was exhibited at @fotohof in Salzburg as part of Project Groundswell.
It was important for me to see this body of work sit within an international context, a project rooted in Atlantic waters and Irish rivers, now in conversation with a wider European audience.

Last week we launched The Ocean Within publication at @fotohof in Salzburg as part of Project Groundswell, a book born from looking, listening and learning from the sea.
The project began with stories of fish as timekeepers, about otoliths and scales as living archives, about what memory looks like when it is written in calcium and light. Seeing the work gathered into a book and shared in that space was deeply moving.
Huge thanks to the team @fotohof and @photomuseumirl for their care and rigour, especially Herman and @kiangtanya and @trishlambe and everyone who shepherded the exhibition and publication so thoughtfully. Thank you to the scientists who trusted me with their knowledge, especially Ewan Hunter and Adam Mellor from AFBI. To Neil Burkey for his expert copy editing.
