What makes a great magazine cover? Some of my favourite covers of all time feel simple. I say this, knowing that the hardest thing to do is make something look easy. The Feeding Change issue explores how food sits at the intersection of politics, climate, culture, and technology. Rather than offering simple solutions, the issue’s stories explore bigger questions about how our food systems are built, who they serve, and how they must evolve — now and in the future. Conceptual photography is where my brain feels most at home. 🧠🏡 How do you transform big abstract ideas like the housing crisis and healthcare into a single image? Not to simplify the issue at hand, but to clarify it. The process is part problem-solving, part visual mischief, and all held together by sheer chaos and espresso. Conceptual photography is my favourite loophole. I don’t have to show reality as it is, I get to show what it means. No Ganni bags were injured in the creation of this image. 🦜🤍 I don’t love AI, but all the “Lamborghini” driving tech bros online tell me I’m foolish not to experiment with it. For this editorial, we printed an AI-generated forest landscape on a very real (and very expensive) canvas backdrop. Then we built a forest in front of it by hand. The tension between the two worlds made the whole thing feel more surreal. And then fun I added AI bird shit on a nice bag, because if that’s not what this technology was created for then someone is going to have to explain it to me. Can AI ever replace the act of creation? Absolutely not. Was it fun dragging logs up two flights of stairs? No. Was it fun dragging them back down at 2am? Also no. Would I have it any other way? Extremely no. In June, I moved out of my studio. A space that had become, conservatively, 80% of my personality and 180% of my storage. The decision forced me to re-evaluate my relationship with photography. And also myself. Was I still an artist without a space? Was I failing or free? And while I did love that space, it was only ever a location. The real magic was the people who made the climb to the second floor with all their gear and no judgment. The friends who willingly let me stick their head in a hole, who ran home to get more hair extensions because MORE HAIR, who let me pull clothing from their private collection at the drop of an immaculately preserved vintage hat, who stayed way (way, way) past midnight to clean up the path of devastation I often leave behind me. It’s because of you that I still love creating. It’s because of you I have the opportunity to keep creating. And just know covering you in spaghetti is my love language. Did you know my work was in a gallery 2 years ago? OF COURSE YOU DIDN’T—because I never told you. Welcome to episode 1 of my new 300-part series: Things I Should Have Shared at the Time, But Didn’t And Now I Have To Explain Why The piece is called Sitting With Discomfort. I had the opportunity to stay in Prince Edward County for a Creator in Residence program. I had preconceived notions about what I wanted to (or felt like I should) create during my time there. But my mind had other (ie. no) ideas. So instead of trying to keep busy, I decided to take a chair into the farmhouse field to try and sit still for the first time in a very long time. And that was exactly what I needed. We make art to be seen. But sharing it? That’s a whole other art form. It takes energy. Vulnerability. Coffee. Therapy.
