award season was -so- exhausting Still glowing from getting to meet and catch up with so many beautiful souls this past week. Proud to have been nominated for an @audiobooks Audie Award for my work on Looking for Group by @quicunquevult produced by @sourcebooks.audio And also to have been a tiny part of the @libby.app Libby Award nomination for the audiobook of Katabasis by @kuangrf produced by @harpervoyagerus (although, truthfully, Morag and Rebecca were the real stars of that particular show) I am eternally grateful to have landed in a corner of reality that affords me occasion for even one velvet jacketed event, let alone two, back to back.

Happy launch day to Fagin the Thief by Allison Epstein ( @rapscallison ) which releases today in print from @doubledaybooks and in audio from @prhaudio Based on the iconic character from Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist, Fagin the Thief provides a vivid back story (and a first name!) to London's most gifted pickpocket, Jacob Fagin. Epstein deftly guides the reader with tenderness and wit through Jacob's life. From his upbringing in a Jewish tenement in Stepney, through his rise to infamy in the slums of Saffron Hill, and beyond the events chronicled in Dickens' famous novel. We meet a vivid cast of characters: Jacob's widowed mother Leah, the rogue Anthony Leftwich who helps Fagin refine his skills. We meet Bill Sykes, Nancy, and Bet. We meet the Artful Dodger, Charley, and Oliver. We meet a silent man that Jacob never met himself, but whose presence is nonetheless constant. What we see most clearly, however, is a picture of London at a very specific time in history, from an angle that seems often to be forgotten. Epstein paints the pre-war Jewish experience of London so clearly, highlighting a level of prejudice and segregation that existed long before the Holocaust. A HUGE thank you to @kevintcollins for his kind, patient direction, and to @hvamaudio and Curated Audio for producing. In honour of goodbyes... Last week, we laid my lovely dad to rest. The man who gave me my start in life, and taught me so much about curiosity and perseverance. We also said goodbye to @gymnopedie_bk , home of Bottom of the Ocean. A show that tangibly grew every one of my artistic muscles, and gave me my start in New York's weird and wonderful indie theatre scene. This moment comes from the end of the show. We'd lead our five audience members into a dark, cavernous room, lay them down on beds, place coins over their eyes, and gently sing them to rest. Pretty sure backing vocals come courtesy of @mandacwallace and @zoemargolis . Parting is such sweet sorrow, but how lucky am I to have had these two colossal presences in my life. Dad, if you can see this, I love you. Gymnopedie, if you can see this, may your towers be blessed with pigeons.

"No, this is the ACTUAL CASSETTE that they played!" In April 2024, @actualjulian called me. "We've got a show coming to The Cell next year, and they're looking for a sound designer. I really think they need someone with a big heart who can think outside the box. Can I put your name forward?" Almost a year later, and we're just closing our SOLD OUT RUN at @thecelltheatre , and my heart has grown even larger! This weird and wonderful show has been such a gift. I have never been part of something with such a lengthy, thorough development process. Being able to craft something from such an early stage has just been the biggest privilege, as has working alongside so many fantastic creators and performers. Special thanks to @leegrid2 and @erin_treadway from @loadingdocktheatre who welcomed me to their team with open arms and enthusiasm, and who trusted me to somehow build an 18-speaker array to showcase their bangin' choons. Also shout out to @vitale6172 and @kayepur , who made collaborating together a total dream.
