We’re continuing our History of Audiobooks series with the decade in which audiobooks began expanding into the mainstream publishing industry.
By the mid to late 1980s, audiobooks were gaining more visibility, more industry attention, and a stronger foothold in the places people were already discovering books. This was also the moment when the audiobook world began to look more like an industry in its own right, with growing recognition, wider distribution, and the creation of us, the Audio Publishers Association.

May is Get Caught Reading Month, and yes, getting caught with an audiobook absolutely counts.
We want to know: what is the funniest, weirdest, or most inconvenient time you’ve been caught listening?

Good news for audiobook fans and educators alike: a new MIT study found that students in an audiobook-based intervention gained vocabulary, and that students who struggled with reading made significant gains when audiobooks were paired with one-on-one instruction.
It's just one more example of the positive role audiobooks can play in helping more students access language and learning 🎉

Sometimes you just can't contain your excitement 🤷
Example: "You're gaspcasting so hard, I thought someone had broken into the house!"

We’ve talked about moving between print, ebook, and audio. But there is another way some readers are using audio: doubling up.
More and more people are following along with the text while listening to an audiobook—and for good reason!Research suggests it can support comprehension and vocabulary growth for some learners, especially in second language learning contexts.
It also makes intuitive sense for plenty of everyday readers. Seeing the words while hearing the pacing, tone, and emphasis can help with focus, make dense material feel more approachable, and turn a reading slump into forward motion. Read-aloud support has also been shown to help dyslexic readers handle more difficult texts.
Have you tried immersive reading, or are you a one-format-at-a-time kind of reader?

We’re continuing our History of Audiobooks series with a period that helped bring audio into more hands and more places.
As new organizations took shape, early pioneers helped define the format, and libraries began playing a bigger role in access; audiobooks started reaching a much wider audience. This was the era when audio became more portable, more available, and more embedded in everyday life.
