'Ideas come from us looking for them; from creating them; from getting obsessed with them; from executing them; from hating them — all that makes the idea.'
– Lluís Lléo
‘The one thing that my work has taught me over the years is how futile it is to try to control anything, the only way to live is to listen to the world around us, and submit.’
– Yoshiyuki Shimizu
‘The point is to go down rabbit holes, get distracted, find something that resonates, or demands further thought.’
– Sheryl Garratt
‘Wood grain is like a river – you think you can control it, but it pushes you, just like a current.’
– Abdollah Nafisi

Where Ideas Form | Lluís Lleó | Serra de Dàro
‘Ideas come from us looking for them; from creating them; from getting obsessed with them; from executing them; from hating them – all that makes the idea.’
For Lluís Lleó, being an artist means searching for the unobtainable and never settling for the comfortable option.
In our new book, Where Ideas Form, he tells us how he is motivated by ‘the risk, the adventure, the thrill’ that he derives from his work, partly because ‘that’s what artists do: we make no sense. And it’s fantastic!’

Where Ideas Form | The Space | Tian Taru
How Sebastian Mesdag followed in the footsteps of his globetrotting Dutch family to discover richer depths and transformative moments from his idyllic jungle retreat:
In our new book, Where Ideas Form: Volume 1, we venture deep into Payangan, one of the wettest regions of Bali, to witness the magical process of indigo textile production first-hand, from the stunning setting of Mesdag’s studio Tian Taru.

Where Ideas Form | Book Launch | Formal Invite
In celebration of the launch of our new book, Where Ideas Form: Volume 1, we are creating a five-day pop-up bookshop at Mason & Fifth Westbourne Park.
This pop-up brings together our full collection of publications – past and present – creating a temporary space for reading, reflection and exchange.
Through beautiful photography, interviews, essays and reflections, Where Ideas Form: Volume 1 considers how ideas are nurtured and sustained – touching on ritual, working practice, psychogeography, and the deep connections between physical wellbeing, storytelling and creative expression.
Set within Mason & Fifth Westbourne Park, the pop-up becomes a space to encounter these ideas in their physical form – books to be handled, pages to be returned to, and conversations to unfold.
On Saturday, Hole & Corner and RAFT founder Sam Walton, and Editor Mark Hooper will be at Mason & Fifth to answer questions and talk about the book.
Join us as we celebrate the launch of Where Ideas Form: Volume I - entrance is free to all.

Words by Mark Hooper
Our friends at Sasa Works are raising funds to establish a unique, land-based interdisciplinary arts school in Portugal. Their aim is to unite land, craft, art, and healing in one 24-hectare ‘People’s Forest’. Moved by community, creativity and collective responsibility, the project is an extension of the ideals that we ourselves support and promote at RAFT.
You can discover more about the project and make a pledge to help make it happen via their socials.

Where Ideas Form | The Idea | Where Ideas Form
After a decade of publishing Hole & Corner, we are incredibly proud to have produced our first new book as RAFT, continuing our commitment to storytelling rooted in craft, culture and the rhythms of creative life.
Where Ideas Form: Volume 1 is a richly crafted book, bringing together artists, makers, chefs, musicians, designers and thinkers from around the world to uncover the places and spaces – physical, digital and metaphorical – where inspiration emerges.
The result is a spectrum of creative experience: from the quiet contemplation of a private room to the vital energy of shared, collaborative environments.
Through beautiful photography, interviews, essays and reflections, the book considers how ideas are nurtured and sustained – touching on ritual, working practice, psychogeography, and the deep connections between physical wellbeing, storytelling and creative expression.
