This Saturday, May 16, is the final day to view Lenore Golub, an exhibition of paintings by the Brooklyn-born artist known for her intimate abstractions and deeply observed studies of place. Presented together at Blunk Space for the first time, in one of the landscapes that shaped her, the exhibition reflects a lifelong creative practice marked by brilliance, subtlety, and emotional depth. Together, the paintings affirm that a lasting artistic legacy can emerge persistently and on its own terms – guided by place, memory, and an unwavering commitment to making. This Mother’s Day, we’re reflecting on the collaborative body of work by Mariah Nielson and her mother, Christine, created for the exhibition Soft Rock at Blunk Space last spring. The exhibition began as a mother-daughter design challenge. Christine’s return to weaving after decades spent in nonprofit and entrepreneurial work inspired Mariah to focus on her own . In turn, Christine – who has long encouraged Mariah’s artistic practice – asked her to design the surfaces on which the cushions would be displayed.

Inspired by Leonard Koren’s Undesigning the Bath, we asked Mariah Nielson to reflect on bathing rituals. What is the most “undesigned” bathing place you’ve experienced? Natural hot springs in the Jemez Mountains in New Mexico. There’s something profound about the simplicity of a hot spring – being immersed in water shaped entirely by the landscape, with no intervention beyond what’s necessary. The setting – on the side of a mountain, in a pool of hot water, stars above – felt both grounding and expansive. What are some of your favorite features of the outdoor shower at the Blunk House? The outdoor shower at the Blunk House is really simple, which is what makes it so special. It offers the feeling of being both sheltered and completely open to the environment. My father built the outdoor shower in the 1970s from salvaged redwood, and it’s been gently updated over time – new doors and floor boards and a plexiglass overhang. I love the ceramic soap dish he made and the towel hook Martino Gamper installed during his last visit to the house. #undesigningthebath #jbblunkestate

The Blunk Double Hoop Earrings take their form from a pair JB made in 1975 as a gift for his wife, Christine Nielson. Thoughtfully reproduced by Tess Young, the design brings together two interlocking recycled 18K gold hoops joined by a sliding spherical bead, available in silver or bone – introducing a graceful, geometric form. #jbblunk #jbblunkestate

As founder of Coyuchi and the wife of JB Blunk, Christine Nielson’s (@chris_nielson ) practice is rooted in decades of work with natural dyes and a lifelong dedication to textile craft. Working with locally sourced wools in their natural grey, white, and black, she hand-dyes with pigments such as cochineal, onion skin, fustic, and madder – creating tones that are both subtle and luminous. These one-of-a-kind cushions reflect Christine’s enduring mastery of her medium, adding a richly textured warmth to any sofa, bed, or sitting area. Explore her pieces in person at Blunk Shop or online with the link in bio.

"So how do I define a great bathing environ-ment? It is simply, or rather not-so-simply, a place that helps bring my fundamental sense of who I am into focus. A place that awakens me to my intrinsic earthy, sensual, and paganly reverential nature. A quiet place to enjoy one of life’s finest desserts amidst elemental surroundings. A profoundly personal place, even when shared with other people, suitable for the most intimate sacraments of bathing.” — Excerpt from Undesigning the Bath by Leonard Koren. Reissued by Blunk Books, 2024.

Save the date ✨ Lenore Golub opens at Blunk Space, Saturday April 18. Featuring small-scale abstractions and studies of place, this exhibition brings Lenore’s work together for the first time in one of the places that shaped her—revealing a quiet, deeply committed creative practice. “Across these porous, interwoven bodies of work—landscapes, geometries, and abstractions—her focus was the subtle tension between soft and hard, color and form, space and gesture. As she once wrote, her geometries and line were a 'search for perfection tempered by the intrinsic softness of the body and undulating nature of the land.' This tension was the productive crux of her decades-long inquiry." — Excerpt from the exhibition catalog Please join us for the opening reception of Lenore Golub at Blunk Space on Saturday, April 18 from 3–5pm.
