Classified/Unclassified
A speculative exhibition workshop on unidentified artifacts
Established and built by Bruno Stefanini between 1960 and 2015, the SKKG (Stiftung für Kunst, Kultur und Geschichte) collection comprises a vast amount of about 100,000 items from the Stone Age to the present day – from outstanding works of art to butter molds to celebrity undergarments. Some items are difficult to categorize–thus, the catalogue lists 757 “unidentified artifacts.”
Taking this difficulty as point of departure, the workshop explores speculative ways of exhibiting. Students’ projects draw on tensions between accessibility, (re)-presentation, and narrative threads that may run through distant temporal layers.
Special thanks to Severin Rüegg and Christian Kunz for their guided tour through the SKKG Collection.
Students: Silvana Aponte, Rebecca De Bautista, Nevin Götschmann, Nicole He, Eva Jäger, Caroline Krasnosselski, Paula Meyer-Clason, Fabian Pitzer, Jan Reisecker.
Lecturer: Burkhard Meltzer.
Toni-Areal, Kaskade 6th floor, ZT 6.K500-U
Opening event: 29 October 2025, 17:00-19:00

Die Suche nach dem Haus meines Vaters by Jan Reisecker
In Die Suche nach dem Haus meines Vaters, Jan returns to his hometown to explore the connection to a family member he never truly met. As he visits emotionally charged places, he finds himself drawn to the sites of a possible encounter.
The film was created during the Design Process Workshop with Joseph Popper (2024) and is now featured as part of the Cinemanext – Film Talents Austria competition. A screening will take place on Nov 3, 2025, 18:30 at Moviemento, Linz.

“The window is the hole, not the glass.”
A window is not an object; it is a directed absence. It is an access point through which the world speaks, and through which we look back. Windows are more than just functional frameworks; they are radical gestures. They determine what is visible and what remains hidden. The window is not the glass. It is the disturbance. The possibility. The doubt.
The workshop took place in Zurich in April 2025. A publication will document the students’ work.

Book Lauch – Live Reading:
Launch of the Seeing publication series on Visual Culture by the MA Visual Communication at ZHdK. Seeing is a series of books that contemplates the peripheries of what we consider visually perceptible, comprehensible or expressible. Each book in this series assembles contributions that navigate a constellation of related ideas, allowing a reciprocal meditation on and a renewed attention paid to those things that tend to remain hidden from our gaze. An evening of thought-provoking visuals, readings, and discussions that will challenge how you see the unseen.

Seeing Volume 2
Seeing is a series of books that contemplates the peripheries of what we consider visually perceptible, comprehensible or expressible. If what we find here are images, then they are ones that attempt to elude our awareness. They may appear volatile, fleeting, impermeable, enigmatic, disquieting, inferior or irrelevant, and therefore we tend to spurn or disregard them. Each book in this series assembles contributions that navigate a constellation of related ideas, allowing a reciprocal meditation on and renewed attention to what usually remains hidden from our gaze.
Seeing Volume 2 bridges two main themes by exploring how images are able to portray things that do not or might not (yet) exist, and how images are able to affect us emotionally. The volume features visual reflections, poems, annotated lists, experiments and observations made by students in response to two seminars on Visual Culture in the MA programme in Visual Communication at ZHdK. These responses are introduced by Björn Franke, linked to the realm of perception through a visual essay by Anina Amacker, and brought to other states of consciousness via an essay by Sarah Owens.
