@viola_yip My Body as Transducer: Instrument Building from Transductions to Transmediality
In her artistic practice, Viola Yip develops unorthodox self-built instruments for her compositions and performances that explore the complex and dynamic relationships between materiality, media, space, human body and machine body through sounds. In this talk, she will share some of her recent work, from a lightbulb, dinning turntable, an electromagnetic feedback dress, a laser feedback instrument, an inflatable feedback dome, and how different instruments serve as different sites for ontological investigation that music communicates across medial boundaries through the presence of the listening body.
Viola Yip is an composer-performer, sound artist and instrument builder based in Berlin. Her instruments and peformances have been presented and supported by places such as Stanford University, UC Berkeley, Harvard University, Cycling ‘74 Expo, Hong Kong Arts Center, Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln, Akademie der Künste Berlin, Hochschule Luzern, Gare du Nord, KTH Royal Institute of Technology Sweden, Elektronmusikstudion EMS Stockholm, NOTAM Oslo, Oxford University, University of Huddersfield, Sonorities Festival at Queens University Belfast, NEXT festival Bratislava, Arter Museum Istanbul, Serralves Museum of Contemporary Arts Porto and Pinakothek der Moderne München.
